Hey guys

Well I'm lookin to get a dedicated Jig rod

This Rod will be throwing 1/4-1/2oz jigs and trailers with 16#-20# fluoro I throw 3/8oz 80% of the time.

Usually wont spend over 150.00 a a rod nowadays. But I have a gift card for 50$ at an outfitter (Cabelas) so could go 200.00 if they carry them.

Probably havent bought a rod in 12yrs or so.My boys got me a Sierra 702 shakyhead rod that I like alot but a Jig rod is a completely different animal.

I fish with 1st Gen Kistler Heliums and Argons right now.

I prefer a 7ft rod but might go to 7'3 if its a good stick.

Dont like the pool cue feel I like alittle tip.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Thanks Rick

Hey Rick. Welcome to the Ultimate Bass family! Pleasure to have you with us. Pull up a chair, make yourself right at home and jump in wherever you feel comfortable.

There are a lot of options in that price range so be prepared for a bunch of different answers.  lo

Personally I think you could go with the Dobyn's Sierra in either the SA 703C, SA 704C or if you want to go the 7' 3" route  the SA 733C or SA 734C.

Gary Dobyns is a member here and answers questions directly when he can over in the Dobyns Rods Forum board. Maybe you could ake a post there and ask or even call Dobyns directly. They are great folks to speak with and always willing to help but won't pressure you at all about buying from them.  :-*

Btw, I am not affiliated with Dobyns Rods. I just personally believe that they make the best rods for your money in any price range. Just my 2 cents worth.

While you are here, if you would like to win some free gear from some of the great companies that sponsor our site be sure and put your name in for the New Member's Contest and the Weekly Contests .

Looking forward to seeing you around the boards and to learning from what you share with us.

In the meantime, if you need any help with anything at all please don't hesitate to contact me or any other staff member.

Once again, Welcome!

Rick you're going to get lots of advice on this one.  I fish with Bass Pro Shop Extreme Rods all of which are 7ft long.  My rods I jig fish with are either MH or Hvy.  I have a couple of Lee Smith Custom rods I jig fish also.

There are a number of excellent rods out there in the MH and Hvy from Abu Garcia, Dobyn's , Lew's and Shimano.

Good luck on getting that prefect rod.

In that price range there is only one I would buy. Especially since you like some tip on your rods.

Sierra 734c and it is so much more than a jig rods. I throw weightless senkos, spinnerbaits, worms, and on occasion topwaters.
It pulls fish out of the slop and trees but yet casts and skips like a dream.

Is the 734c better than the 704c ?

Alot of guys suggest it over the 704.

Does the 3" make it that much better?

I had a custom 7'3 MH F on a MHX blank and didn't care for it. Seemed tip heavy even had micros on it.

It was like a pool cue.

Guy who made it said it would fish like a IMX. It didn't. ~xyz

Luckily my Boy loved it and now it is his.

I'll be putting a Daiwa CT (7.4oz) on what ever I buy think it would balance out??

Thanks Rick

The 734c has more tip than the 704c. All Dobyns 73? have more tip than 70?.
My 734c has a Daiwa Tatula svtw 7.2 oz  and it balances great.

In that range I really like the Denali Lithium 883. I wouldn't throw 1/4 oz on it, but for 3/8 and 1/2 its outstanding.
Great tip and a versatile rod. I also throw spinnerbaits and smaller swimbaits on it.

LgMouthGambler

I personally prefer a 704 over a 734 as they arent as tip heavy. I never seen the advantage to 3 inches (mind out of the gutter boys). One of the best rods I had from Dobyns was a Coalition 704

My wife says she is gonna leave me if I go fishing one more time........lord how I will miss that woman.

SFL BassHunter

I see no issue with a 704c. I have a 704 spinning rod, it's rated for lure weights exactly like the 734c I have.
Either will serve you well and will make an excellent jig rod.
Not sure if Cabelas sells them but if they do, that is the way I would go.

When you decide on which one your going with if you decide to go with a Dobyns be sure to look on his site and see if he has any in the mislabeled rack that could save you some money if he has the one you want.

Looked at the Lithium GOOD lookin rod but the blank doesn't seem to be on par with the other rods at that price point. That just an observation as I have never got to actually fish one.

The Powell Max 3d was also a nice stick.

The Avid X was also very nice.

They didn't have any Dobyns rods to check out. :'(

The weather is still lowsy hereso I'm in no huge rush so keep the suggestions coming guys.

Thanks Rick

There aren't many rods I haven't fished in your price range . Personally, I've never been able to judge sensitivity by looking at a blank.
The lithium is as good or better than the others on your list. I have 2 in my boat now that were fished all of last year by a Elite series pro and they have a few battle scars but they held up great.
If you decide to look at the Max 3d the 723 or 734 would be the ones to consider.

I wasn't saying that rod wouldn't be sensitive. Just that the blank didn't seem as Crisp to me, if that makes any sense. The action just wasn't what I prefer personally. I Like alittle softer tip per say.

I did put my reel on and lace it up. Balance was good.

Anyway I appriciate the advice. and you are spot on with what Powell Rod I was lookin at 734.

Thanks Rick

If your goal is a more moderate jig rod you should be looking at a Falcon or Hammer.
In my experience they are both a touch slower than most. The Cara is going to be over your budget and the Hammer has Winn grips but they are a nice rod for the $.
They also fish about a half power softer than than most. I picked up the 7ft.3 xheavy down on Toho last year and can fish a 1/2oz. football head fairly easily with it..

zippyduck

The Dobyns Sierra series has a little slower tip than their other lines which is why I suggested it.
