I have a 2004 175 Bass Tracker running a 60 Merc 4-stroke, all purchased new, and I fish on average about two to three times a month. When fishing I average about 4 to 6 miles of travel in the boat. I was wondering what is the rule for replacing a steering cable? I keep the steering lubricated and so far the boat steers fine with no problems.

I had to replace my cables but after 22 years that is to be expected.  When the start to seize up you will know it for sure.  Mine got so it took all of my strength to turn the wheel.  (I am a slow learner)

I also have a 99 tracker, I 'm the original owner, and I haven't needed to replace the steering cables yet. I think staying on top of the maintenance and making sure the motor is greased properly has helped.

I've only had to replace one in all my years owning boats. Keep them lubed and inspect for damage/wear.

Yep. If they're moving freely and there is no obvious wear, you should be good to go.
Keep them lubricated and they will last a long while.

I just had to replace mine last year, but my tracker is an 87 model.  29 years of service isn't too bad I guess.

Does your boat still run with the original Outboard?

Thanks guys. I guess I still have a lot of years left in my steering cable. Comparing my age to my steering cable suggests that I will wear out before it does :)
