When you use a better grease thats not the same color as any other manufacturer, yes it voids. I for one do that, which is why reels tend to be smoother when I get through with them. Also, go ahead and send a reel in to a manufacturer where they can tell you have boogered something up, and they will tell you to pound sand. Im generally speaking of those that have no clue what they are doing.
My wife says she is gonna leave me if I go fishing one more time........lord how I will miss that woman.

Pro, LMG, THANKS for the explanation!!!!!  ~c~

Still don't think I'd start 'learning' how to clean and lube on a New reel.......personally......I won't do it period......but as stated......I'M NOT THE SHARPEST HOOK IN THE TACKLE BOX.  ;)

About the ONLY thing that I 'ENVEY' in this passion of ours......IS HOW GOOD YOU GUYS ARE AT SERVICING YOUR/OTHERS REELS!!!  :embarassed:

AGAIN, thank you guys for the GREAT INPUT......and Sparky.....these guys know their CRAFT.....so listen to their input, NOT MINE!  ;)

I've owned some Quantums over the years.  My biggest issues and the reason I just aren't interested in owning another are:

1. Something breaks on the reel and the part is NLA.  This has happened more than once.  I know reels break but when the manufacturer doesn't bother to provide support just a few years down the road after the reel was made is a big turnoff.

2. I've never seen any manufacturers reels where the finish starts peeling or wearing off like it does on just about any Quantum reel I've owned.  It's been quite a few years since I've owned one but that was the most unusual thing about those reels was the extreme rash on those reels after just owning them a couple seasons.  Not that I'm big on appearance but seriously, those reels looked really bad after such a short time of use.

This is so true. Good comment. I have been in the repair and resale side of fishing equipment for a number of years and this has been a problem with trying to resell Quantum reels.

I don't recall the exact model, but a few years ago I got one in that just looked horrible. I did a total tear down and C&L on the reel and had to give it away to a friend of mine because it looked so bad it simply was not resellable.

And my buddy says he likes that old reel and tells me how smooth it is, so mechanically the reel is fine, but looks like hell! So I avoid Quantum myself both new and used reels. I personally don't use any of them, but I do use some reels made in the same Korean factory as the Quantum reels. Some Bass Pro, Lews, Abu, Browning and Quantum are all made in the same factory. And because of this I can often use parts and gears from one brand and easily swap them into another brand because they all use some of the same tooling in manufacturing.

Actually I have a wonderful Daiwa Fuego that the front plate has basically lost all its chrome and is now on raw material. Apparently they don't like the heat much. My understand is the TDZ's with that magnesium plate tend to do that.
But at least you can get a replacement plate that will just chip off in the heat as well.
