I am a big fan of the Shimano Castaic. IMO the push-throw mechanism they use is solid and prevents grinding of the gears that you get with traditional flipping switch reels. It's also very natural for me as I've been using them for years. The problem is the castaic is heavy. So having a very light and sensitive rod is lost with it; unless using 2 ounce or better weights, in which case it balances out.

The Core MGFV is the perfect reel for my needs, but it was too expensive. Now they've quit making it and the used versions are limited and the price is going up.

My question is for the JDM guys, is there a Japenese version with this same mechanism that I've been unable to find as a possible option?

Nope. Castaic and Core FV is pretty much it.

To my knowledge, No.

Daiwa did make the TD-Ito in a left handed model with a slipping switch. Never seen a right handed model though. When they come up, they are around the 200 dollar mark. Its not an MgFV though.

Guess I need to email Shimano and tell them to bring it back LOL yeah that will work....

Thanks guys.

It was about 50-75 dollars more than a standard Core if I remember right. The Core is/was the best reel ever made by Shimano in my opinion. That's why it was at the top of my oly Grail list for ever it seemed like. I've only seen 6 total that have come up in the last 3 years on every forum I visit.

Well if you see one with the flipping switch that you don't want, let me know.

I'll keep my eyes open. I wouldn't mind another, but for me it has to be Premo.

It will be a work horse for me so looks are not a factor and I can fix the guts if need be and the price is right.  :-*

I feel the Ds are not that much smaller than the Bs in profile.

They look better to me, plus I love how the D series locks the spool down.

I meant that just in Mikes case. He said the Castiacs were big. The Ds just seem to sit a little lower, but are basically the same in size to me.

We all know that you loooooove the "D" Rock.  ~roflmao ~roflmao ~roflmao
