Yep, finally have the new boat. The proud owner of a G3 Sportsman 17 powered at the back end with a Yamaha 90hp 4 stroke and the front end with a Minn Kota Edge 55 lb 12v. Dash has a Lowrance Hook 5x right in the middle. No carpet (Like to shrimp and crab too). Future plan is to put a Lowrance hook 7 bow mounted finder to keep an upgraded trolling motor (to a saltwater unit) company.

looking good. love the G3's. I think you should consider a 24v tm. tins are not at their best in wind and a 12v won't last as long as 24v. better to get it now. good luck and happy fishing.

oldfart9999, gatorglen and 3dees. Thanks for the tip! Found out the hard way. 15-20mph "breeze" and was blown everywhere but where I wanted to go! Because I'll be taking it in brackish to saltwater, 1st upgrade will be to a foot controlled 70lb 24v trolling motor. Any suggestion as to manufacturer would be a big help. I'll have about $1000 to spend on the motor, mount and 24v capable charger. I'm also planing on some deck lights (shrimping at night) and head lights (to see where I'm going when shrimping). Any hints , have Fathers Day and a Birthday coming up and need a "wish list" for presents! LOL
For all, thanks for making me feel welcomed! I appreciate that!

Minnkota for me. MotorGuide is good to, I just don't like the switch on the footpedal. It's on the wrong side. But that's a personal thing. But for long Jevity I would definitely be getting a saltwater version. It will last you three times longer than a freshwater one in that bracket for salt water. Duelpro makes a good charger that won't break the bank to.

Nice Boat.

For use in Saltwater you may want to consider getting a Hand Controlled Trolling Motor. The Cable on the Foot Controlled ones tend to rust out and stick when used in the salt.

Most of the Saltwater ones are White in color.

Also EACH time you use your boat in the Saltwater make sure to wash it down good and keep an eye on any anodes that are on the Boat or Motor. These anodes absorb the electric charge that happens when running in Saltwater and they get eaten instead of the Aluminum Parts on the Motor or the Boat.

:shocking: Sticker shock!Dang them white trolling motors are 'pensive! Most had to take 2 nitro pills after looking at them! LOL
Deadeye, thanks for the tip! Most of my fishing is freshwater river/creeks with occasional trips to brackish for bull reds, flounder and specks. I'll be in the saltwater for shrimp (2 month bait season) and crabs. Might have to figure out something to use on the black motor til I can afford the white one!
gatorglenn, I'll check on the duelpro! I like inexpensive! Have a Minn Kota on it now and not having any problems so I'll be sticking with them for sure!

If your planning to Dip Net for shrimp you can set up with anchors and never even have to put the TM down.

I HAVE used my foot control TM in salt before, just make sure you wash it off really really good.

Most motors have a Trim Tab on the bottom of the cav plate. On some this is made of Aluminum and is the Anode. On other motors there will be Anodes bolted on the side of the lower unit somewhere.

Your G3 should be painted all over so you might not have as much of a problem and a bare bottom Aluminum boat would.

Brackish water I'd still wash/wipe it down good. There is a Spring Run I fish once in awhile that feeds into Lake George. It is called Salt Springs Run. When you get done and back on the Trailer you will see a line of salt on the boat from the amount of slat in the run. I always clean her up good when I fish there.

I know the saltwater motors are not cheap. If you go with a Minn Kota consider the 80 pound thrust versus the 70 pound thrust.  I know it is a few hundred dollars more, but I can tell you from experience the 70 # unit is the same motor as a 55. The 80 # unit is the same parts they use on a 36 volt 112 unit. It will live a lot longer for you.

That is my next upgrade.  I am looking at a hand control and I also fish tidal water here on the Chesapeake Bay and Potomac River.  My choice will be a Riptide hand control with two foot switches.

Deadeye, My son (38y/o) and I (69y/o) will be throwing a 6ft cast net over bait. Weighs about 7lbs (a little over 1lb per foot). We'll be shrimping mostly the incoming tide in 5-8' of water. Boat has a Yamaha 90hp 4 stroke and was thinking about just using the big motor for this year.
fishandcamp, I'll keep that in mind when I start getting real serious about getting it (prolly in March/April next year when the taxman cometh to bring my refund).
