I've read 'Knowing Bass...The scientific Approach to catching More Fish' by Keith Jones.
Frankly I re-read it every hard water season.

It's a good read BUT it is more of a educational read. Meaning it reads like a 'school text book' more than a educational novel. Lot of technical terms and a hard read unless of course your screen name starts with the word 'anal'.  ;D

So this copy I got is copy written in 2002.

Now I've heard of the book, "The Scientific Angler, from Paul Johnson' but it's copy right date is 1984. I would think there is something more recent out there.

So if anyone knows of a book PLEASE share it with me.
Reviews are ok too.  :)

So I'm wondering if anyone knows of a book that maybe more up to date or different view point or different Author.

For those who are not fimilar with either book.
These type of reads tell you what a fish sees based on science, (number of cones in the eye, how the lateral line sends messages and what messages, how the fish's taste buds actually taste and what they can taste), again, refer back to screen name.  ~roflmao

I like to know the ' whys' of fishing more or as much as the 'whats' in fishing.
Once you understand the 'whys' the 'whats' are easier to weed through.
MY OPINION ONLY!

Every year there will be hundreds of 'whats' (new products). Especially after Icast.
The science doesn't really change BUT our understanding of the 'whys' should.

So anglers help me out....PLEASE. Long winter ahead!!! :shocking:

I haven't read it yet....but for years I have heard of a great book called "BIG MOUTH".
1 is luck, but 2 is a pattern!

I had asked this before and here is a link to the post. A lot of good books in the post.  Timely too since it is getting cold out and some will be looking to stay in and do some reading on those days it is a tad to cold!

went well.  I had bone spurs removed as well, which was equally important, but now need to get them removed from my other shoulder.  I was better within a few weeks and wasn't down long enough to do some major reading and watching of tv

Paul Johnsons book is one of the best I have ever read.  Probably more so than Keith's, but Ive read them both many times.  Even though it was written in '84 it is still very relevant.  Fish anatomy and behavior hasnt changed.  I really like Doug Hannons books, and also KVD's.  Coldfront has some good insight to many good books also.  hopefully he'll chime in soon.  Jim

BASS has a good video section and I'm sure the FLW site does too. I've printed articles and threads from sites I belong to, makes for some good reading also, I have a collection of videos too, 60 or 70 of them and may have a couple more before the end of the year. I have no idea why but the rest of the family just don't appreciate watching the videos so I'm relegated to only when they aren't home or in the 'puter room. I'm doing this from a small notebook 'puter while watching tv, I've taken it to McDonalds or Wegmans(a local supermarket with a cafe) for lunch or snacks and used their wifi while checking out videos. I will admit, I'm becoming a bit concerned about the time I spend at it, there isn't enough. lo

I re-read Bill Murpy's book ever spring.  Wish we'd had internet when Bill and John were going strong...how these two were able to translate observations into strategies I think is amazing.

Love to hear what you think.

Another place to find important reads is your state dec, dnr, fish and widlife department. You can find info about the bait bass will eat, things like seasonal sizes, colors, spawning seasons and what the bait eats and where it can be found. Your tax and license dollars paid for it so why not take advantage of it.

I agree that Knowing Bass is a good book it gives you insight on your pray. It is also a hard read for most but worth it if you can get thru it.Here are a few more.
The Book of Black Bass
There He Is, Bill Dance's book on the art of worm fishing (a very good read).
Lunkers Love Nightcrawlers.
Tom Mann,s Methods for Catching Bass.
Al Lindner's Bassin' Facts.
Slider Fishin'
I believe time on the water is a must but one needs a starting point. Knowing your pray is a a good place to start, the 1st. two help with that. The others give some great points on what to do.  I hope you can find some of these as they are rather old but very informative.

I'll start looking for Slider Fishn'...

understanding the food/prey helps a lot...but what I wish is  more info on the predator/prey interaction.  How each has developed behaviors to take advantage of the other, or 'foil' strategies/approaches of the other.

I've read as much as i can on behavioral differences between gizzard shad and threadfin shad.  Understand a small amount...how gizzard shad behavior changes depending upon YOY vs adult, etc.

Most literature out there just looks at water conditions, temperatures for spawn/reproduction.  I always remember, one of the key focus of fisheries folks is from the aquaculture perspective.  Reproduction.  How to get more, get more fish.

As anglers, what I think we want to learn goes quite a ways beyond just that stuff.  It's no longer 'shad 101'...it gets more to master's class levels.

Slider Fishing was one of the first books I read on bass fishing and I agree it was very good.  A lot of it has to do with his slider technique, but there is still very good info on bass behavior and why his method works so well.  he also talks about fishing line, poles, etc  I would highly recommend it

Has anyone read High Percentage Fishing: A Statistical Approach To Improving Catch Rates by Josh Alwine? I just ordered it on Amazon, it looks interesting.

I believe Lee has read that book. Might want to shoot him a PM and get his opinion on it.  :)
