I know its been discussed so many times before but can i get an input on what ya'll think of the Lews Speed Spool and the Daiwa Tatula? Which do you prefer? Im looking at getting a new reel for under $130 and i can get the regular Tatula for $98 and Type R for $119 or a Lews BB1 for $117 and the 2016 Mach 1 for $77 when it first comes out. Whats your preference? Thanks.

Both are great reels... The Lew's is lighter. Smaller profile too.

The Diawa is a great reel. But I'm a lew's guy.

When you say "speed spool" that actually describes the majority of their lineup. Just fyi.

I would look at the Tournament MB. Retail of 140$. Weighs 6.7oz, comes in every gear ratio including a 8.0 that is 35 IPT and has the 14lb multistack drag.

Im also a Lews guy and have been since they reintroduced the line about 5 years ago.

I tune reels as well, and Lews respond better than the majority of Daiwa (including Tatula).

Get the Tatula. Add worm gear bearings and you have a killer reel.
My wife says she is gonna leave me if I go fishing one more time........lord how I will miss that woman.

I have both and I love both.  You can't go wrong with either.

The Tatula R 100 is available in 8:1 / 31 IPT, Lew's doesn't offer that.

Lew's Super Duty is available in 8.1:1

And one other model I believe for 2016... I'd have to look.

Lews offers several at 31 IPT in the current price range you are looking.

Mach 1 is 7.1 which is 31 IPT
Tournament MB is 7.5 and 31 IPT and the 8.3 at 35 IPT
BB1 in a 7.1 which is also 31
BB1 Pro in a 8.0 which is 35 IPT, along with about 4 other models.

Most of Lews lineup comes in models that are 31 IPT. Gear ratio means nothing, its the IPT that you need to look at.

Never had a Lew's although back in the 80s I had a couple of Ryobis which I think were the same. At least then. But The only problem I've EVER had with Diawas was the 4 that were stolen from my storage locker. I've got several that are 15 years old and I use them a lot. I only buy the mid-priced ones. I can't afford the premium ones. I love my Diawas and really won't buy anything else except for maybe some $50 BPS reels for salt water use.

But that's just me.
The world is full of people who can hear a loud bang, feel a sharp pain in the foot, notice smoke trickling out of their holster . . . and never put it all together
