After about 8 years my trolling motor rope broke from the friction of rubbing on the frame. I replaced with a new rope I had on hand, but it was smaller, and I soon noticed it was fraying in the same place. I used a piece of small black rubber hose, similar to the old windshield wiper hose, sliced it long ways with a spiral cut. Then I was able to open the hose up and place it around the rope by twisting the hose. Then I slid it into the position I wanted it and tied a knot behind the hose to hold it in place. Now when I lower or raise my trolling motor the only friction is on the rubber hose. See two pix below . . .

Tks for sharing the tip with us.  I replaced my rope with a plastic coated steel cable from Lowes.

Great inexpensive tip  ~c~ It ruins a trip to have the rope break, this tip will save a lot of heart ache!

I replaced a rope last summer.  Used a section of shrink sleeve to protect the cable from the Rubs

Neat tip, thanks!

Lawnmower starter cord works very well too! :-*

great idea :-*

Last week on Guntersville for a tournament, My buddies trolling motor rope snapped when we launched the boat. He couldn't find his spare rope, then remembered he gave it to someone at another tournament the week before but never replaced it. We scrounged around the boat looking for something that would work as a temporary fix. He had a spare life vest in the rod box that had the laces on the sides. Snatched out one of those and rigged it up. I switched the handle out and it worked great for the rest of the tournament. it was a little on the short side, but it got the job done. We called that fix McGuivering it  ~roflmao

The lace story reminded me of a time back in the 1950's when me and two other teens rented a boat and motor and headed up a river to find a place to swim. When we were ready to return we couldn't find the kicker starter rope. We used a pocket knife to cut the strap from a seat cushion and tied a knot in one end. That was used to start the kicker.

The good thing is it worked. LOL.

Am I the only one impressed that his first rope lasted 8 years?

And awesome tip! Thanks for sharing.

scbassfanatic

that is impressive. I had one last 6 or 7 before it broke on me. I want one of the Gman cables, but for some reason i have read that cable will not work on a MK Edge for some reason.

I fixed mine this past weekend like yours. Works great.  Thanks for the tip.
