Went fishing on the Fore River in Weymouth MA today. My son and I fished around the 3A bridge for a couple of hours early this afternoon.

The weather was brutal with air temps at 88 degrees, bright sunshine and the air was so thick it felt like you were going to stick in it while you were trying to walk.  A small breeze by the water took some of the edge off and made it bearable enough for us  to give it a good effort.

While I finally was able to get out and put my new saltwater gear gifts to use, neither Josh or I caught anything. Sorry, I wish I had more to report than the weather conditions.  >:D

I did learn a lesson today and that is always a good thing. Judging by the water level we were no where near the optimal tide so from now on I am going to have to check tide charts and plan accordingly when possible.

Still a good day spending time with my son and enjoying that saltwater smell.  :)

Hopefully will have a better report for the next time out.

Thanks for the report Jim.  Don't sweat it, it took me quite a while to figure it all out.

What did you use for bait?  AND how did the gear cast?  Just interested if you ran into any line problems with the reels or such.

Thanks for the report Jim and like you said you got to spend time with your son and that's worth a lot. 8)

I apologize for not responding when I saw this yesterday. I allowed myself to get side tracked.

Since I only have the one saltwater rod (will be getting another on payday next Friday  :)) Josh  and I shared the Ugly Stick with the Quantum Optix 60 size reel. There were absolutely no  problems with the reel or the line whatsoever. I did give it a couple shots of Line and Lure Conditioner the night  before and again in  the morning, but I do that as a habit for all my reels, not because I anticipated any problems.

We used clams for bait (recommended by the guy at the local bait shop for fishing where we were fishing). It did take a little getting used to casting. It was more of a lob cast than the normal way I'm used to casting a spinning outfit, but similar to casting a Carolina rig so it wasn't bad at all.

I'm going to make sure I do my homework on the tides next time. Which will be the topic of another thread I am going to start to get some answers.  :)

Sounded like a good first time out, really.  It is all a learning curve, believe me when I say that I got skunked more than I caught when I first started.

You might want to try some PVA mesh for softer baits so it is easier to cast (I probably need to make a thread on that stuff with pictures), or that mesh that is used for making salmon egg sacks, it helps to hold the bait on the hook better.  Some guys use a product called sticky string that you wrap around the bait and hook to make a little package, although I'm not sure how well it will work with soft mussels.

Even though they suggest one bait, try to mix it up a bit.  Like bass fishing, one day one bait will be the food du jour, and the next day it will be different.  That is where the double drop rig pays off with allowing you to put out a couple of different ones to see which works.

Were you able to save and freeze the left over bait for next time?

Tks for sharing the trip with us.  Glad to hear you and the son were able to spend the day together.  That tide fishing is tricky to figure out.  While living in Alaska and fishing around Anchorage the tide was key for fishing the local creeks.  You'll get them next time.
