Iced up Livewell Lids

More times that I care to admit I've held up a Livewell Check in morning launch for a tournament because my livewell lids were froze shut.

I've panicked and used screw drivers, measuring boards, if you can use it to pry I've used it. The only way to get them to let go is to take my coffee cup and dump my coffee out and then dip lake water to pour on them. Now I've lost my coffee.

Now I keep a spare coffee in my back compartment. Most anything will work for dipping water but I like something with a handle so I don't have to get my fingers wet just before a 70 mph run on a below freezing morning.

I've never given any thought to the possibility of that happening. Something to remember in case I get to fish any winter tourneys.

And to think you're all the way down there where it didn't used to get cold.

First time it happened to me was in a tournament in Missouri, then one in Oklahoma. Both of those were multiple day events and I stuck cardboard in them when I closed them. Then when it started happening to me down here in Louisiana, it was always unexpected, so I had to come up with a quick fix LOL

Carry one of the larger plastic coffee cans with a handle, they hold about a gallon of water, you will be able to dip once instead of several times. Additionally you can use it to fill a weigh bag quickly with out having to dunk the bag, hands and arms in the livewell.

Don't know anyone who drinks that kind of coffee.

the best thing to do is some prevention ahead of time to keep that from happening.  just as i have stated before about the use of silicone on your fishing line and rod guides to prevent them from icing, silicone is just the ticket for any boat lids.  simply spray a coating on all on contact surfaces.  this trick also works great on vehicle doors.

Not sure if this would work, but living up north (and now in TN) if my car doors force shut and I didn't have anything quick to thaw them I found that throwing my shoulder into the door would break up the ice so I could open it.  Didn't take much and wouldn't damage the door.  I wonder if the same principle would work for the live well lid, just hit it with your fist a couple of times to break up the ice.  Might be surprised how easy it might work and save your coffee!

I always thought that stuck livewell lids was God's way of saying it's too damn cold, go home.

RV anti freeze works wonders on lids...and the bilge area. I always keep a gallon around. It is environmentally safe and good to -50

Pour some around your lids if you think its gonna be cold. It will get into the carpet and keep it from sticking to boat.
