the steering on my 93 1800 xpt is so stiff i am looking to replace the cables and whatever it needs so it wont be stiff anymore, its like trying to turn a car that has power steering with the engine off.

Yeah nothing worst than hard steering.  Good luck with getting you're new steering installed.

Is it stiff at low speed as well as top end?

It's a little more expensive but hydraulic steering is amazing :-*

Gotcha, I was hoping maybe it wasn't the cables  :surrender:

Might be able to relive them and get some more time.

I think he meant to say relube them.  When my steering seemed to be sticky or tough I found out that I had to run some oil down the lines and relube the cables.  I also had a grease connection on my steering wheel that I used to hit once in a while, and it made a big difference.

to run oil down the lines just disconect from the motor. dont need to watch for anything just loosen cable from motor and add oil like how much and if usiing air would help to move oil down the line till oil comes out at the wheel. then work the wheel to see if it works

i have the same problem with steering on my new boat. I am thinking on going hydrolic....Bay Star systems are about $500 and from what I've seen it's an easy install...or so the way it looks  :o

Any of you guys have it on the boat or installed it for somebody?

I replaced my steering not too long ago with the same kind not hyd,
Just be carefull to look good at the box mounted behind the dash and make sure you don't  install it backwards.
I say that from experiance-- I did install it backwards and got the surprise of my life when I left the ramp and turned the steering wheel to correct myself , and headed 180 degrees , right at the bank.
I did not return to the ramp , but rather did fish , but was very careful and only idled around .
When I got home , I removed the 4 screws and turned the gear box over and it worked fine.
I did have to remove my motor from the transom to remove and replace the new cable, there just was not enough room to pull the cable out of the sleeve.

It's always a good thing to test anything you do before getting to the ramp  :o

They make a steering cable lube tool. Actually they make them for all types of cables. It's a block with a slit rubber core that clamps over the cable where it enters the sleeve. You then insert a plastic straw from a can of cable lube an spray away. The lube will eventually come out the other end.

This isn't the same as I've seen used before but it looks like it supports a grease gun also. -Jim

I don't think that is a zerk fitting, I'm sure that is the fitting used for connecting the oil bottle and tube to.  I wouldn't grease a cable unless it is stated by the manufacturer since that would actually stiffen it up a lot.

They look a lot like the oiler fittings I have on some of my older Penn level winds.

You're right Jim, this one has the zerk.
