To many, Baytown is their personal secret salt and brackish fishing wonderland. It's borders touch numerous bays. Cedar Bayou and Goose Creek run through this growing little city, one of its borders is the San Jacinto river.  It is one of the back bay breeding sites of many species of fish, and crustaceans.  In a cast net, you can find the seasonal fry of many species, including quarter inch long shrimp just starting out their lives.

To me, it is the buffer town between the hustle and bustle of the city life of Houston, and the slower life of rural Texas found on the other end of town.  It is the home of Exxon, Chevron, and a couple other oil companies.  This helps to keep many of the waterways navigable which would have otherwise been silted up by now.

There are some free well placed public boat ramps available and a number of private, locked resident only ramps around, and one private pay ramp that I know of, is available also.

The city has done a good job in making free shore access available to the local angler by creating a number of parks along many of these bodies of water.  Because of the high amount of silt and muck bottoms, wading, which can be accomplished, isn't a commonly seen option to shore fishing around here.  It's shallow flats are a fantastic place for kayak, canoe, and jon boat anglers. There are so many spots to fish, that I can't list them all in one post.  Travelers who visit can find accommodations, but since this area isn't as popular to tourists as other places along the coast, little is available right on the water.

One place is Galveston Bay RV Park, which sits on the Peninsula surrounded by Cedar creek and the end of the San Jacinto River / Galveston Bay, they have a very nice new fishing pier, and are close to Baytown's only private pay boat ramp.

Right down the road from the trailer park, is the only live bait, publicly accessible pay boat ramp, shop in town.  Thompson's fish camp is open most of the year, and it a great place to access a few of the smaller bays, and is a short run to Galveston Bay.

Frozen bait is available at numerous gas stations around town, and of course a cast net is a valuable asset.
