Ive been thinking about buying a new rod, and Dobyns is who Im thinking of trying after reading so many reviews. I cant afford to change out all my rods so I was thinking of getting more of an all purpose rod that I could see and test before committing to one brand. The 734C seems to fit the bill, just wanted to here every ones opinions before pulling the trigger. I have started to throw a lot of wacky rigged senkos lately, so I want the rod to handle weightless senkos, trigs, jigs, and spinnerbaits.

The 734 is a very versatile rod and would be a good choice if you are looking for a multi-purpose rod to test the waters with a new company.

Be careful, these rods can send you down a slippery slope.

Thanks for the input.  I just picked up my first lews speed spool the other day. I fish pro qualifiers and wasn't expecting much of a difference because of the same price, but I couldn't of been more wrong. I could actually cast and pitch a weightless worm. So now I have the notion of upgrading rods. Did you say something about slippery slopes?

You nailed it for the all purpose rod. The Dobyns 4 power is great. The 734 has enough tip to cast light gear and the back bone for heavier stuff like a jig.

I have a 734C and agree with all that is said. It is a great rod and you will want to upgrade all of them to the Champion line after you try this one out. I know I do.  ;D

I plan on the 734c as an all purpose do it all rod until I can narrow my next rod purchase down to very precise techniques.  Until that time comes and the budget allows,  what would be the best ratio reel and line to pair with it. I'm planning on getting a lews tournament speed spool in a 6.1 ratio,  as I'll be able to slow down my retrieve,  or speed it up as needed. Does that ratio make sense or should I consider differently.  The biggest question that has me stumped is line type and pound test.  If I want to throw a spinner bait then switch to a swim jig and skip docks, and then flip into some weeds and bushes should I go with flouro or mono?

Bobby Saffel

A reel in the 6.4:1 area will be fine. It's an all purpose gear speed for an all purpose rod.

I think flouro can do all the techniques you mentioned well only place you might have a problem is topwater. If you were to go with braid then you'll have all your bases covered.

I got my dobyns hat,  a 734 c,  6.4 lews speed spool,  and 12 pound flouro

Took it all to a pond today to try spinnerbaits, swim jigs, buzzbaits, and wacky worm senkos.  The rod performed flawlessly,  it has the right tip,  and backbone needed.  Caught fish of all techniques,  for a total of ten.  Here are a couple pics.

Thanks everyone.  Fished our local tournament tonight and only got two in the boat.  Now I just need to figure out how to fish them.

I've got a 705 cb on its way, but now I have to decide what my third rod will be.  I like the 734 so much with everything I've used it for that I'm on the fence with just getting another 734.

I helped a buddy buy some rods a week ago. He said 5-6 rods is what he wanted to start. My suggestion was a shallow/mid crank rod, a flip/frog rod....and the rest 734s. He bought a 705cb, 735, and a few 734s.

I have several 734s and I know plenty of guys that have multiples of that rod. The way I describe that rod is....its not a rod that will work for a technique...its THE rod for a technique.  Now there are limitations of course, but to me its the best rod for swimjigs, small swimbaits, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, light Trigs, chatterbaits. Its extremely versatile. I hate "multi-purpose" as a term, but the 734 is THE rod for many things. One of the few TRUE multi-purpose rods Ive ever put my hands on.

After you get your cranks, flipping and 734s bought...then you can diversify and really dial in techniques that you love or work well in your area. This is almost my standard suggestion for anyone looking to get into Dobyns rods. Now, in certain parts of the country spinning rods might take the place of shallow cranks or flipping.

Well I got a 735 the other day so that puts me at three with a 705, 734, and the 735. I think I have my bases covered for now. I have been reading about dobyns spinning rods,  I do some walleye fishing so I may be upgrading in the near future.

Mike Bush

I use a DX702 for verticle walleye jigging...also my dropshot rod. I'm thinking of going to a Champ 682 for my short drop rod and that will also get use for eyes.

Tylermsawmiller

The 702 was what I've been leaning towards.  I'm glad you posted your setup,  that helps a lot,  I won't be second guessing myself when I order it.
