OK guys, I got to fish the Grand Kankakee Marsh today 6-9-05 from 9 a.m. til 10:45 a.m. and here's the results...

air temp hovering around 85
water temp unknown
water clarity - turbid
overcast and hazy
barometer 29.87
humidity 57%
wind - NE 7mph

Nature observations: scarlet tananger, orioles, gostlings are getting bigger, saw a snapper around 20" across the back crossing the road, olive-sided warbler, hooded warbler, purple martins, couple softshelled turtles, and the carp were in fighter bomber formations but not moving.

Walked down to the slop and due to the heavy rainfall we've had recently a lot of the good slop was buried under water, yet some remained...so I tied on a Cavitron Buzz Bait and on the 2nd cast it got blasted by a 10 pound bowfin (bass woulda been nicer, but the bowfin put up a good fight and totally demolished my buzz bait - gonna take some serious bendin to put it back in order.

Started hearing some activity in the channel behind me where the slop is still so thick ducks can walk on top of it...tied on a black/chartreuse 3.5" BPS tender tube rigged texas style...first cast landed a 10" rock bass...didn't expect that one at all, a few minutes later I caught a 14" bass and things were looking up...another few minutes passed and I caught a healthy 16.5", 4 pounder...must have been feeding heavily cuz it had that magic football look to it.

By now it was 9:30 and scorching already, the humidity was terrible, but wonderful...makes for good fishing!

Started working my way back to the car casting a few of my favorite pieces of structure...managed to get one more small bass around 13" and then it was time to hit the road...it's a good stretch of the leg to where I start first, and with the heat coming on strong after 10:00 a.m. I was ready to hightail it out...glad I took a bottle of frozen water along.

Dang.....Must have been a football....I caught a 20 incher last week....Weighed 4 lbs 2 oz....lol......

Those are river fish for you

Fishaholic

yeah...I think it's dependant on how they're feeding...lot of frogs and fry swimmin around now, and with the gills spawing there's lots of good forage out there for em...but I understand what you're saying, last year I caught two bass on the same day, one 21 incher that only weighed a tad over four and another a 21.5 incher that weighed in at 7.5 pounds...go figure.

WTG Fishaholic, great fishing report. Don't worry about that buzz bait much at the rate you win them you should have plenty and if not, I imagine it won't be long before you get some more ;)
