Hello all,

I have a Shimano Chronarch 100 Super Free reel, it's one of the gold colored older models and quite possibly my favorite reel.

Well, I was out fishing the other day tossing Horny Toads and having a ball when the reel handle came off in my hand!  It's held on by two small screws in the back side of the reel handle.  I went to the hardware store and bought two metric machine screws that appeared to fit but the problem is going to require more than two screws.  It's going to take a new reel handle as the holes are stripped out!

So, does anyone have an old Chronarch 100 SF lying around that is maybe all worn out, but the handle and screws are still good?

I NEED a new handle (and screws), so please reply or send me a PM if you can help...

You may still be able to get these from Shimano. It would be a lucky shot but you never know until you try. Pro Reel would be able to help you out. I can tell you this they are not cheap.

I will check with shimano next week. I can get you a better price than they would give you.

Ok, I'm bad, I would put a couple of stove bolt and nuts on em.  :shocking:

I appreciate the assist.  I found one handle for $36.00 but that seems a bit extreme.  But, at this point, I have a wonderful reel that isn't doing me a bit of good, so....

Can you have the handle re-tapped for a slightly larger screw if all else fails?

Maybe, but it'll take a bottoming tap and some screws with pretty small heads to clear the drag knob...

Shimano doesn't have any of those handles anymore, and won't be getting any. If you found one for $36.00, thats actually a good deal. I could get the handle from the current calais reel and that would fit, but it would be more than the $36.00 you found for an original chronarch handle.

I ended up drilling the holes all the way through the handle and threading them.  Then I also threaded the holes in the steel backing plate.  Then I turned down a couple screws until the head fit into the countersunk holes in the aluminum handle and screwed everything together.  It seems to be holding better than original....

But I sure do appreciate everyone's responses....

You wouldnt happen to know the size of those machine screws would you? I have lost one and need to replace it.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry to dredge up an old thread.

Hey Jeep, I honestly cannot remember the size of the machine screws that were originally in the handle.  I believe that I used 10/32 machine screws.  I drilled out the handle all the way through, then countersunk the hole on the outside of the handle.  I then gently chucked the threaded end of the screw in my drill press (I call this my Polish lathe) and using a file, reshaped the head of the screw so that it would fit into the countersink.

I then tapped the handle and the backing plate and screwed the whole thing back together.  It's now stronger than factory original...
