I've thought that thinner tails in plastics were always the best way to go but since I used the Ugly Otter a few years ago and caught bass, I started wondering, what about thicker tails on jig trailers?

Ugly Otter hand pour

My brother in law just gave me some Yamamoto trailers which got me thinking.

Why not design a chunk trailer with thick appendages and thin connections similar to the thick stuff hanging off GY's bait? The flapper tail was nice but necessary?

So I rigged one up on a 1/2 oz jig after I poured it. First cast - missed a solid hit; second cast - 3lb bass.

Those nobby legs flopped up and down and sideways creating a larger profile in the murky water of my pond. I'm sure Gary's will work, but I might just replace his thin flappers with those nobby legs.

(After looking at it again, my design kind of looks like the Star Ship Enterprise. LOL)

Maybe thats what you should name it; Enterprise!!!

Nicely done, as long as it works right?

If it does work, it will lead to other designs that are compact but extreme in action and the illusion of mass, the idea being that bass are extremely territorial and reflexive when it comes to creatures entering its space.

They don't call me the bass-McGyver for nothing! heh heh
Rather than Enterprise, how about Bone's Bones or Trible Trouble? lol

A few years ago I would have thought bass prefer more crawfish shaped claws on trailers but I forgot that bass have eaten Uncle Josh pork frogs for decades and they don't look like anything.

Note the delta shaped tails on the rear of a chunk. The flappers provide action whether moved fast (swimming jig) or slowly. (hopped on bottom).  Rage Tail semi-curl tails may bear a resemblance to claws but bass don't know anatomy from Adam and respond of the whip action of the tails.

Logic suggests that thick rods moving every which way have as much chance provoking a strike as the other tails mentioned for whatever reason. Bass may be stupid but they are sensitive and aware, like all animals in the wild.

Next week will be a tryout. Here is the finished product:

I like that black one :) I would buy to put those on my flipping Jigs since I use GY Hogs too :)

I'd like to know what the results are Frank, I like those chunks, you don't happen to make them 5/8 inch wide and 17/8 long do you? Live long and prosper.

Old Fishermen never die, their rods just go limp.

Nice looking otter, I love those Ugly Otters.  That one looks a little bit like the Little Otter, but with the flaps of an ugly otter.  What's the size?
