Here's my first attempt on tying a cpl. different versions of a shad pattern. Reg. shad and "woops"y shad.

Nice looking flies! I would say anything you get them in front of will eat them!

Rudy...found the bass chasing shad and bustin' the water but couldn't get them to eat the fly. :(  Tried shad color fluke on them too but to no avail, then I threw a "woops"y dawg topwater and got one small one to eat it and when they busted the water again I threw a crazy shad topwater and got one on it. They seemed very particular about eating anything other than the real thing. Even threw a rattle trap at them. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr ~rant. But not going to give up on that fly just yet, I still feel it will catch a few bass. Gonna give it a try on Caddo and see what happens. Will keep u posted.

Dang don't know "how/why" they could resist!! I don't fly fish at all(never learned how to) but would think that something so realistic would work!! Keep at em though- cus I bet you can catch white bass like crazy on em!!

Horny, what size are those flies? How long are they? I've been flinging flies for about 47 years, and tie most of my own. When I find a fly pattern I really like, I'll usually tie them in a couple different sizes. Like with lures, bass & other fish will sometimes key on a particular size bait. Perhaps a few in different sizes would help your quest. You might also want to add some weight to some of them. I've fished with flies next to guys throwing lures, and often when they're hooking up & I can't seem to, it's usually been because I can't get the fly down fast enough or deep enough. May not have been the problem you're having since you say you caught a few on topwater, but I would definitely try to have some variety to work with to give me the best chances.  ~shade

Hey Bigjim,...i've only been tinkering with my fly tying vise for a cpl. of years now. Mainly use if for tying feathered trebles for my crankbaits and make a few flies for bluegill fishing. One of those shad patterns that i tied were on a gamakatsu finesse wide gap , style # 230915 in a 5/0 size. Not sure what the other hook was. Love your idea of adding some weight to the hook to get it down to where the bigger fish may be. Thanks for the advice. Sorry it took so long to get back to ya.
