Why is LSS-2 transducer by appearance look much longer then LSS-1

At first glance the LSS-2 transducer looks unusually long for a transducer.  If so how much longer then the LSS-1?  I just purchased a HDS-7 and it arrives on Thursday.  Next project is Structure Scan.  That said I'd like to see some LSS-2 install pics if folks have them. 

Also, can you get structure mapping on HDS8 Gen2 from LSS-1 structure scan setup?

It is larger by quite a bit. I was in same situation. Just bought 8 and 7 units and found a deal on LSS 1. The LSS 2 has further range than the original but other than that, all functions are identical. The mapping function is built into the unit, not the transducer so no worries there.

Is it generally true that you need to trim your motor up when operating Structure Scan?  I saw a video that said it was wise to do that for optimum clarity.

The LSS-2 ducer is 10.1" long, whereas the LSS-1 is 6.8".  IMO, best place to mount ducer is on the bottom splashplate if you have a jackplate.  The included mounting bracket is all that's needed.  I included pics of an LSS-1 ducer mounted, but the point is the same.  Due to the increase in length of the LSS-2 ducer, you will likely have to move the ducer off-center on the plate to avoid the lower unit from hittting the ducer when the engine is trimmed all the way down.

StructureMap is specific to Gen2, not the LSS, so you will have it with either LSS-1 or LSS-2.

Regarding motor trim, it all depends on your specific case (no jackplate, amount of jackplate setback, ducer mount location, etc.).  With mine mounted per the pics, I get great returns over 90% of the trim range (lower 10% some clutter).

Thanks for the follow up.  That is exactly what I needed to see.  At first thought the LSS-1 seems to be the one I want.  Are the returns really noticeably better with LSS-2?  Man,  that is one very long transducer.    :shocking:

The LSS-2 certainly provides increased side range for both frequencies, and I also notice increased clarity when running in 455 kHz specifically.  So much so, that with LSS-2 I run it in 455 nearly all the time, as the beam angle of 455 has always provided more side coverage than 800 kHz.  With the LSS-1, you do sacrifice detail and target separation when running in 455.  That's not the case with the LSS-2.

To quote some recent advice from a BCB buddy of mine ..... " go big or go home " lol   :)    I got to message ya later I just can't decide what to do LOL. ! Working on a car now at the house (story of my life lol this job is gonna put me in the HDS 10 range )  but look for a message late this evening !
