Thoughts on Rod Length

How about Size of the Rod length that can be changable?
Not as fixed length ex)6ft,7ft rod
but which you can change the length of Rod at any point and set to fix it.

any comments is welcomed

Maybe you could come up with a composite rod blank formula that includes Viagra! Then, if you ran into a situation were you needed a slightly longer rod, you could just stroke it a few times.


You're trying to design a Swiss Army knife in the form of a fishing rod. Anyone who owns a Swiss Army knife will tell you it's not great at anything other than cutting, and any tool is better than no tool. Most anglers want rods that are lightweight and well balanced, with backbone and tip to match the technique. You're just looking for gimmick that will sell in Walmart.

They had them in England years ago, although I can't remember what they were called.  Some were 3 piece rods, and some were two.  All of them had different weight tips so you can customize to the size of fish you were targeting, the two piece rods also had different sized tips.  The three piece ones had a center section of different length.  Although measured in meters, most English rods ranged on the longer side, 9 to 13 feet so omitting a section was possible enough to shorten the rod considerably.

Even crappy rods were quite expensive back then, and multi species anglers couldn't afford more than one rod, so this would allow them to still fish multi species by just adjusting the length and tip.  It was also easy to replace a broken tip or rod part back then also.

Tapers designed into a rod for specific techniques would be difficult to attain with an adjustable rod. That's why many anglers have multiple rods, particularly those of us who primarily only fish using lures.

I've seen telescoping rods, but each section has to lock in place, or the rod won't perform as intended, so that might likely mean a length adjustable rod would be like Pferox has mentioned, with multiple mix or match sections, and that would likely get costly, then very difficult to get a specific taper, particularly since different weight is used with different techniques. So length is not the only consideration in any rod.

Having a rod that can be adjusted for length, may be fine for dunking live, or natural baits, but not for casting lures and again, most folks want their rods to fit the technique. Plus as Lou has mentioned, balance and other desirable features may be lacking.

IMO, creativity & innovation is great, but sometimes the proverbial "wheel" doesn't need reinventing. 

Of course if you can design and produce a rod that does it all and within a reasonable price, you should have a market for it! I hope the best for you in that regard!

Being A relative Newb to this (accurate!) casting thing, I've found that having rods of approximately the same length have increased my accuracy. I'm sure you guys who have been doing this for decades know how to adjust your casts for different rod lengths, bait weights, etc.  I'm learning, but there's a learning curve.  Even if a rod of adjustable length that had any sensitivity at all were available, for me it would be a disaster.

I buy my rods for their tapers.  changing lengths would change tapers, and that wouldn't get my money.  ever. for me, fishing is consistency.
