Mostly I use spinning tackle and finesse baits on a highland impoundment. We've had much more wind around here than usual and it's affected my fishing style. I'm now frequently using spinnerbaits and underspins on windy mornings but my baitcasting rods seem to all be fast or extra fast actions. What material, action and rod length do I need to launch the lure farther with a little roll cast? I'm looking for the rod to do the work. No grass or submerged vegetation around here but long casts are a definite help. Just thought I'd ask...it's not like I don't have a bunch of rods already that didn't work out for whatever I thought I'd use them for.

You'll need a rod with more give in the tip.

My setup of choice for spinnerbaits from 1/4  to 1/2oz is a Dobyns Sierra 734 C and 30 lb. braid.

The Sierra is a graphite rod with a slightly softer tip than normal. I can throw a light spinnerbait a long way with this setup.

If the wind is really high low trajectory casts help. Spinning rods like the Sierra 702 SF or 703 SFwill help prevent backlash in this situation.

I don't have a Sierra, but I think Smallie's advice is right on. I'm using a Dobyn's Fury 734 C and I like the way it casts. Not sure how the tip compares to the Sierra, but I know it'll launch a 3/8 oz spinnerbait really well.

X 2  These Dobyn's Fury 734C's are my go to rods for fishing Spinnerbaits, Buzzbaits, Senko type baits, Horny Toads, Jigs and Texas Rigged soft plastics and Small Swim Baits.  I've even thrown some top water prop baits with it  ;)

one of my favorite spinnerbait rods was the 735 glass, a bit heavy though.  734 is good.  megabass perfect pitch was also a good one.  anything with a "half the rod bend of a crankbiat rod" is good IMO.  meaning if you think of the entire parabolic bend of a crankbait rod, but just have the tip that about describes it for me.

I fish mainly 1/2oz spinnerbaits plus a trailer, so my favorite rod for it is the DC736CB Glass. It will toss them a mile and I can feel the thump of the blades well, so I can easily tell when I get a light bump to set the hook. If I fish a lighter spinnerbait, I toss it on a DC734C since I don't fish lighter ones much and don't have the DC735CB Glass version.

Don't count out the Maverick series.  The 704 or 734 are real performers.

You know, I thought about mentioning the Mavericks. I've heard they are a little softer in the tip than the same model Fury but since I don't own any I didn't want to give out bad info.

I have three and the guys in my bass club, especially the SAF kids must have close to 20 so they are showing their worth. Same with the reels. About a dozen among us with great results.  Just saying.....

A Powell max 733.  just a gem of a rod that can do alot.

For target casting I like a Powell 704. The 7 size is perfect for roll casting accurately to targets. I might bump up to a 734 if I wanted to bomb any long distances. I like a medium heavy.

Funny, I got a couple of the Powell Inferno 704 when they were on clearance for like $69 a piece at Shelton Outdoors a couple years ago.  It's a damn good spinning rod that's medium heavy for sure...
