going through my boat I just bought and did a flush but noticed the rpm gauge needle works but pins all the way up, the motor is at idle, could it be the gauge or the unit at the motor, where should I start. thanks

Hopefully the gauge. Gauge is cheapest fix.

It could be a shorted wire connecting the gauge and the motors stator.

With the motor running check the voltage at the cranking battery. If it's between 13-14 volts that's a good thing. If it's not then the motor's stator could have an issue and that's a bad thing. This check is not inclusive but it's a start.

doesn't the tach have a sending unit?

I don't know about now, but older motors took voltage right from the stator and converted it to a reading. Now I'm sure it's part of the computers.

I had a 02 model that the tach started acting funny. I didn't sweat it much because I rarely ran WOT so it didn't matter. Then one day my cranking battery died. Charged it and it became a repeated problem. Further troubleshooting lead me to the Stator and a large repair bill.

EFI motors should be off of the crank sensor
