So I've been wanting to get one of those strips w/ the alligator clips on them to hang my worms under my box lid but, I don't like paying high prices for something I feel like I can make myself.

So I started putting together idea's and came up w/ a few:

1. Go to grocery store, wait till no one is looking, and take all the bags of chips off one of theirs, and sneak it out under my coat... lol (obviously, that's stealing and I passed on this idea for moral reasons)
2. What else could I use to make my own? I have some small diameter PVC... So I got the idea to split it in half (length wise) and put some screw in hooks down it, and mount it under my lid. Still not a bad idea but, would probably look too redneckish. Functional, but not the best looking.
3. I passed the command hooks rack and saw these (picture 1) hooks and thought, hey those swivel, so when I close the lid the weight of the worms will swing the hook down, where as with the PVC the hooks are immobile and the packs might slip off them when the lid is closed. So I grabbed them. Then got to thinking, what if the sticky just doesn't stick to the foam underlayment under the lid... I then saw this (picture 2) mounting strip... it's for those clear plastic can things they sell at home depot... So Im standing there eyeballing it trying to see if these hangers are A. Thin enough to slide into the rail and B. not too tall to not fit, and not to small so that they fall out... I think that they will fit perfect.... Best part of all, the rail, was $1.50!!!!!!!!! So I grabbed one, didn't make sense not too...

So I think I'm going to try the sticky first, just to see if they stay. But the more I think about it, I might just go on and use the rail if they fit in the rail... It will be much more cleaner looking. I just wont be able to spread them as far apart.

I'll check back in and report on what I decide and how it all works once I'm done... I feel like I paid way too much for the hooks ($3/pack, which makes them $1 each) but.. I still only have $8 in all of it including tax, if it works.

I have been serching constantly for an answer to the plastics question and this sounds like a good one. I wonder though if the first big wave you hit if all yur worms will fall off.

I hope not. Only time will tell I guess. Heading to wheeler next week so, I'm sure there will be plenty waves up there to test it out... lol.

If they do, then I'll have to come up w/ something else that will slide into that rail, and hold them.

Sitting here waiting on the wife to meet me I decided to see if they fit. They are a HAIR to talk. So I took my pocket knife & shaved a little off the top & bottom & it slides in perfect. Here's a front shot (if lid were open) and a side shot (as if lid were closed)

Maybe since they just slide out you could face some to the front and some to the back to see if one works better than the other just for a trial run.
This is a really good idea, I hope it works.

That vidio proves my thoughts wrong. Dont worry, Im used to being wrong. I am definatelly doing that with mine. What did you use to hold the strips to the deck lid?
I appreciat you going out of your way for my benifit, I love how everybody is willing to help out a fellow fisherman on this site.

Everyone should believe in something; I believe I'll go fishing.

Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.

Thanks Mike!

JonBoy no problem.. your concerns were the same as Mine. Looks like they will probably stay on... Now, I do only have 1 pack hanging on each hook... but that makes for 6 packs of worms and I never use that many different colors or styles in a day so... If you were to double up, they might fall off...

For mounting them I used #10x1/2" flat head screws.. BUT if I did it again I would probably use #8x1/2" flat heads b/c the #10 was just a HAIR too big of a diameter to fit all the way flush down into the countersunk hole in the mounting strip.

My deck lids are aluminum & I just laid them up there where I Wanted them along the raised rail section under the lid, and drilled me a tiny pilot hole. Then ran the screws in w/ my drill. If your lid doesn't have that deeper raised rail under it... I'm not real sure what you could do, other than epoxy them in place... otherwise you might screw straight through your lid.

I bought those little rubber "buttons" that stick on to the bottom of things b/c I thought they would be a good way to keep the hoooks from sliding out the end. They look a little BIG though, not as clean as I was hoping but, %100 functional. At least until they get old and the sticky falls off anyway.

This is an awesome idea!!  How many bags fit per hook?  I was thinking this might work for home storage as well. My worms are a mess!

Polaris425

You could easily put several bags on each hook. Especially for home storage. I don't know how many you could put on there & have them stay on in the boat though. Maybe 2 packs each? Depends on the pack & how many worms are in it as well I'm sure.

Great idea!!!! And a very very clean install too ~c~. That looks so good boat companys should consider that has a option on a new boat.

What brand mounting strip?  I was at Lowes yesterday and couldn't find it.  Found hooks ok.

Water was a little rough on Wheeler this week, worms stayed on the hooks no problem... Great addition, and glad I found those strips! lol

well after walking around in Home Depot for an hour and having half the store personnel looking for them, we have come to the conclusion that my store don't have the mounting strips. We even pulled up UB for the pics and looked it up online and searched the part number to be sure. So I will have to order some, no biggie. We are all still trying to figure out what "those clear plastic can things they sell at home depot" are. LOL

After seeing them, now your description makes better sense cus I don't know what they are either. That's about as good as I would have done. ~roflmao

Polaris......just wondering if your worm pack holder is still holding up?  I found the same "mounting strip" and before I order them, I wanna make sure its gonna work!!  FISH ON!!!

Still holding up. I drug the boat 3 hours to north alabama, fished on wheeler 2 days, and drug it back the 3 hours home and I think only 1 bag fell off a hook the whole time, and it was one that I had 2 new full bags hanging on.

This weekeed I drug it for 2 hours (round trip) including some bouncing around through the pasture and I don't remember any of them having fallen when I got home.

For the little amount of $ I have tied up in them, I can't complain one bit.

$3 for the strips, and I think $6 for the hooks.

If you ever do have trouble w/ them starting to fall off, I would bet you could take some pliers and close those hook gaps up a little bit, and make them tighter, and less likely to come off.
