Can someone that has experience with both rods tell me the differences, if any, between the two lines?  I've read the differences in parts used but I'm looking for real world differences on the water.  Is the extreme line really worth that much more?

JMGullo

I have Champions and Savvy series rods and between those two there is a difference. The only extreme rod I've played with is Corks punch rod and I can tell you this. It is way lighter than my chamion punch rod. He will be by in a few to answer your question better.

Mike Cork

I use both, several of each, even the savvy line. There is a weight difference and sensitivity difference. Is it worth upgrading. I can say you will notice the difference, is that going to be worth it? I say definitely.

However I love the champion series as well. All my reaction baits are on the champion series. My Texas rig rod, jig rod and punch rod are all extremes. I picked up an extreme for spinnerbaits the other day and I may like it a little too much LOL

Which rod did you get for spinnerbaits?  I was hoping you both would reply.  I know my questions on the subject have got to be getting old but after a little rod buying stumble recently I'm ready to commit haha.

JMGullo

I might be out of the norm on my spinnerbait rod. I use a 703 for spinnerbaits because I like the fast tip to launch a spinnerbait a mile and use the tip to "work" it instead of just chunck and reel.

I use the 734 champion series and just bought the extreme 704 for Laurie but I've been using it and love it.

Never worry about asking questions  :-* rods are an investment and if youre going with Dobyns I want to help make sure your pleased with your purchase!

i want to try one but can anyone compare a savvy to a veritas. or if the savvy is alot better or not? veritas is my current favorite and 160 i would have to hear alot of good stuff. i would be looking at the ss 703c for an all around rod mostly jigs tho.

Mike Cork

I can not compare that. However next time I'm around one I'll give it a shot. I only fish Dobyns which hurts me when asked comparison questions. I fished Shimano before Dobyns and would say a Shimano Crucial is almost as good as a Dobyns Savvy. Their weight is about the same giving a slight + to the crucial but the Savvy has the plus on sensitivity.

Then the champion series is awesome and the champion elite series will ruin you  lo

lol kk i have never fished a shimano so i dont know what a crucial feels like. we'll see around christmas if i have 160 to spend but is the ss703c a good all around rod? i might just back down to 6'6" just because most of my rods i prefer to fish are that length. but im still on the fence about that.

Mike Cork

The 703 or 704 are both great all purpose rods. If you fish sparse cover then the 703, but if you get into thick stuff once in a while then I'd suggest the 704.

Play with some 7 foot rods, once you do more than likely you'll prefer them. They give you more control over the fish.

I'd agree with Mike, the savvy is a teeny bit lighter than the Crucial, and a little more sensitive.   I wouldn't say I've lost fish on the crucial, but the feeling of a fish hitting a jig is a little more "clear" on the savvy.   I am prob getting a champion jig rod this year, unless someone can hook me up with an extreme for a good deal.

I dont think I can add much to this one that is not already said. My bait-casters are split between Champion and Champ Extreme. I love both, the extremes knock off a bit of weight, and are super sensitive. I tend to make sure my heavier duty rods are Extremes, punching, hollow bodies frog rods and so on.

Personal fav for me and I rod I recommend to most guys buying their first Dobyns rod is a 735C, that rod is slayer.

Seems like the 735 and 744 are pretty good all around rods.  Most of my fishing is pitching jigs and light plastics with a little spinnerbait and crankbait sprinkled in.

Well, I ordered a 735C, a DX743, DX744, and DX704 to start so we'll see what happens.  Anybody wanna buy some Powell Max rods ha?

Hopefully on Wednesday ill be rippin donkeys with them!

Mike Cork

They are quick. Depending on how far away you are from California. If I order in time to get them in the mail the same day I get them three days later in Louisiana.

The Savvy series is a little bit heavier than the veritas but there is no comparison on balance, feel and sensitivity. The Dobyns will out perform 10 to 1.

For crankbait...I don't think you can beat the 705CBGlass model. I've used it for 3-8foot divers and have caught countless fish on it. I also through a spinnerbait and yellow magic on it and it's awesome for the money.

HellaBass

I think for "Feel" rods its worth the extra money for Extremes, but they don't have a bad rod in the lineup.  Comes down to personal preference and budget, you should love that DX744!

I have some BPS gift cards.  Do they carry Dobyns there?

Don't mean to hijack a thread, but my question is on topic.  Why is the 705 and 735 both MH rods?  I thought for cranking you would want a M and for frogs/punching you would want a H.  I am looking for two rods for each technique and already own a E21 wild in 7' MH.  Would these rods all handle the same tasks?

I guess I don't understand the difference between the two for both techniques.

I'll need the whole model number to get you a solid answer. But if they are both the same series the only difference is one is three inches longer, the action is the same even though one is longer. If one is a crankbait series rod a 5 power is pretty stout where in a frog rod it wouldn't be.
