Title: Dobyns Savy Microguide Rods
Post by: JoeBassin on February 12, 2012, 04:54:36 PM
I am going to soon be buying my 1st Dobyns rod and was thinking of getting a savy microguide rod for throwing spinnerbaits, swim jigs, and chatterbaits. Anyone try them, or have an opinion of the microguides vs. regular guides on the savys? Thanks for the help

Here is a pic of a 6.2 I caught a couple of days ago on a Savvy 704c with micros. I love that rod. It's perfect for spinnerbaits and swim jigs. I use mine for Senkos too!

I don't quite have it ready yet but I am working on a review for the Savvy Micro Guides. I must say I have enjoyed the rod and I have been a Micro hater from the beginning. Either way (micro or standard) you'll love the rod.

Great write-up Mr. Cork.

At the end of the article, you mentioned Pop-R's. What length and action do you recommend for that application?

I would use the 703c It's a medium heavy rod but the power being a 3 would be perfect for getting distance in a cast and have some give when a larger fish made a surge so that you didn't pull the hooks out. Treble hooks will tear the skin easily and pull free, that 3 power will help prevent that.

Still on the fence with these.  I'm in the market for a new spinnerbait rod and as much as I'd like to try a micro guide I love my champ extremes and think a DX704 would be the cats hiney.  Hmm.

Do you care to  try to explain the power numbers to me? I don't remember seeing those any where else until I started checking some of the rods recommended on UB.

This is a very nice rod and Laurie uses it, I love my champ 734 for spinnerbaits. Just started using it and everything else feels different, if that makes sense.

Power is going to take me a bit to explain and I'm headed out to the Bassmaster Classic Media day. I will try and get back to this thread next week and help out, unless someone can jump in and explain. If you want send me a PM and if I get time one of these evening I'll swing through and work something.

Here is an interview I did with Gary Dobyns and he explains a lot about rod action, tips, and power ratings. See if this will help some.

Yea I've been using my coalition series 734 for spinnerbaits and love it but needed something a bit shorter for some tighter areas so I think the 704 will do the job.  I'll use the 734 for some topwater stuff probably.
