Well i received the unit yesterday and and installed last night. It was very simple except for running the cables and such. Now here are a few screen shots from this morning. I found it very simple to operate. The problem is trying to look at all the screens at the same time. lo These shots are taken in the local river. It's very bare as far as structure goes.
On the left is a big tree laying on the bottom, which i never new was there.

Which HDS do you have? I have one on the way for my HDS5. Just went through The pain of downloading and installing the software update, so hopefully it'll be ready to go. Any tips on installation?

I have the 7 and 8. Those screen shots posted are from the 8. Only the 8 and 10 you can do more than 2 split screens. It's no pain to do the software update. Installation was easy. Here are some pics of my installation.
I installed it last night. All in all it was simple, like always, the "hard" parts are running the cables. It was pretty much straight forward for installation. When you get the power cable there will be a yellow wire just like what was on the power cable for the HDS 5. This wire is a "wake up" wire. I connected the yellow wires from both power cables to each other. SO when i turn the unit on it turns the SS box on. Here are some pics of installation along with some screen shots. One other note, make sure you have enough gas. I ran out of gas idling and running around. ~b~ Good thing i was close by the landing. lo
First, as you can see i have a skeeter. So to make sure the ducer cleared the sponsons (whatever you call them), i took some ribbon and ran it across the width of the boat which in turn gave me the area where the ducer needed to be clear of so there are not obstructions.

For ducer installation, i bought some marine lumber (plastic board) and made a couple 3"x3" pieces. Glued 2 pieces together (1" thick) and glued it to the hull. To make sure it stayed, together i screwed the two peices together then screwed the ducer to the block. Reason for all of this was i didn't want to drill holes in the hull and maybe in the future i'll get a jackplate and will mount the ducer to it.

Next installed the box. I think the worst part is finding out where to mount it. I opted for the rod box. I'm still thinking i may move it later one. Just not sure where at.

Great pics of operation and the installation! ~c~
Thanks much for the pointers. Great pics/explanation. Will be mounting it on a 520 Ranger. My problem was downloading to my computer. I first needed Java, then went through about 20 min on the download from website to only be denied. Then had to download the individual install. You're absolutely correct on the actual install on the unit...plug in the card, and turn it on! Good luck with the unit!
I went out again today and went to a few different places. Man, the chit you can find with this imaging. :) And did i forget to mention the gas you burn doing it. ~xyz lo
All these were taken in the Red River in Alexandria.

Not sure what's this but some big as pipe supports. I guess they tie the barges up to it during loading/unloading. In both pics you can see the trees and trash caught up in them.

Man, That's good stuff...can't wait to get mine installed. Might not help catch more fish, but I'll have something to do during the tournaments! I'll post some once installed.
Here are a few more shot i took yesterday on the red river out of Alexandria.
We had some high turbulant water the past few months on the river. This pic show the washboard effect on the river bottom.

On the 2d @ 200khz is the green on the bottom grass?
No, not sure what it is as i say this cause in one of the first shots i post at the top has green and i know for a fact that it was riprap/rocks that i went over. In the latest one that your asking about i believe it was just a sandy bottom. Why the green on the 2d sonar, don't know.
I plan on getting one of these soon but not sure which model? Right now I am leaning torward the 7? Can the 7 do the 3 split screen like your first pic?

yes. the 8 and 10 can do a 4-way split.
Not on the 7. I have a 7 on the bow and it only does the 2 way split. Just the 8 and 10 does the 3 & 4 way split.

FANTASTIC ~c~
Only prob i see is the transducer, dont know how it could stay on around here sticking out like that. about 1 trip to the back of ninock
The transducer will flip up. I put the HB one on my jackplate and will be doing the same for my LSS-1. If I get on a rock or stump with the jackplate I have a lot more problems than the transducer I figure. :surrender:
Being on the "step" it gives you some room before you hang it on something.

Coldfront, i take back some of what i said about the screen split on the 7. While you can do up to a three way split it's only limited to a imaging screen (side or down) and what ever the sonar can split up into. In other words, if you have the sonar page up you can split it with the flasher, zoom or bottom lock. It is limited to that only cause the sonar can split. It will not split like the 8 or 10 to show, side, down and sonar. I hope i don't confuse anyone.

better description in this...regardless of which size you go with, or which company you 'invest' in...this technology promises to be highly entertaining. I absolutely have a fever, and a ragin' one at that, for bass fishing. But even with the old 'legacy' sonars...I found myself being very content just idling around the lakes...
Even lakes that I thought I 'knew' when I really bore down and hit 'survey' patterns (think of plowing a field with an old 3 bottom plow)...it's amazing what you can learn even on lakes you feel you know like the 'back of your hand'... and the new side sonar is going to expand my knowledge of 'my' lakes exponentially.
Come on March (march = ice OUT!) ... :surrender:
Denis, I'm waiting on my new unit to come in, and so I will be mounting it soon. I like the idea of mounting it on the jackplate. Could you send me a photo of how yours looks? And does it work okay when you are running on plane? thanks for your insight.
Mounting it inside the jackplate (like most ive seen) it's some what protected unlike how i have mine on the transom. With it mounted like this you will not be able to get images/returns due to the ducer being out of the water while running. If you want to show images while running you will have to mount it like a skimmer ducer on the bottom edge of the transom.

on that note...do these things get 'that great of images' at over 20mph? What is the sweet spot in terms of boat speed? what speed, for instance, are most of the internet images 'taken at'?
I'm thinking I won't be mounting 'like my skimmer transducer' with this thing...as when I'll be using it, I'll rarely be over 5 mph (okay, perhaps 10)...
Not sure but have read where they were getting images at 35 mph. Just don't think they would be that great. I think the best is from 3-5 mph. The ones i posted are all at idle speed around 3 mph. That would be an expensive ducer to be replacing if you mount it like a skimmer and hit something below the water line at a fast speed.
Got mine couple of days ago. Got to mount the ducer this weekend and will be done.
Eight miles an hour on the HB units. It gets to congested faster than that. Too much turblance around the transducer.

seems I've heard most folks mounting these things 'up' a bit...to keep them from busting off...and if there are speed limits for efficacy...makes even more sense...
