While out practicing for an upcoming tourney, put a couple small keepers in your livewell for a while and see if they spit up any crawfish. Then release your fish and study the mudbugs. This will give you a good idea of what the crawdads look like in the area your fishing. Often times, their colors change through out the year on any given body of water. Sometimes they may have more red, blue, or orange on their bodies or pinchers. By using spike-it markers you can make these suttle changes to your baits and have great success. This works great on clear water and high pressured lakes. If time is available, you can place a few crawfish traps out, for a day or two, and you will have lots of models to study. Good luck.

I never thought of this until this year...
At a tournament a couple of months ago, a bunch of bits of crayfish were inside the livewells of some of the guys fishing and I have never seen any colors like that before!
