Title: What kind of Rod and Reel to buy...
Post by: ddeadmond on March 05, 2008, 03:03:20 PM
I am going to buy a new Rod and Reel and I'm looking for suggestions.  I will be using the rig mainly for jig fishing and plastics.  I would like to keep the cost below $250 - $300.  Thanks...  Doug Deadmond

Hey doug! Well I'd say GLoomis but ya want to keep the cost down. ~b~ Take a look at the Falcon line depending on the reel you want I'd look at a Cara or Falcon Expert.
Falcon made some changes for 2008 and have a new Cara T7  :-*
Bluff City probably has some 2007 models and I know Mark was talking of running the 10 or 15% discount thru more of the season this year. Rod sales for them have been sorta slow this year.
He did bring back the St. Croix line but I have no idea how the pricing have been running on them.
If your going to be at the meeting this Sunday I'll bring some of my Falcon pricing sheets with me and a 2008 Falcon Catalog.

You can get a Abu Garcia Revo ($150) and an e21 Carrot Stick LTX ($150) for $300 and it is one heck of a combo. I know, I have one set up. The Revo's are gaining the reputation of the old Shimano Curado because they are smooth, high quality and relatively inexpensive. The Carrot Sticks are really light, sensitive and once again relatively inexpensive as long as you stay away from the Boyd Duckett series and go with the LTX (they are essentially the same rod with minor  cosmetic changes). This will get you set up with a good high end worming rod, but this combo is also going to be a good versatile all around rod as well. You won't be disappointed.

I second Josh's opinion on the Revo/Carrot Stix combo. Tom also mentioned Falcon which I prefer other then the CS. The Revo SX is a great reel for the price and fits almost prefect in your hand. Just be comfortable with what you buy because 300 bucks is a big chunk to drop and find out you don't like it. Good luck
