Title: Base Lake reports
Post by: TomG on March 29, 2005, 07:39:30 PM
Anyone been to any of the lakes on base?  If so how are they doing??  I know some of you will be out pre-fishing Punch Bowl.  I heard 10 inch lizards fished with 1 oz. sinkers has been real productive.............keep us posted................ ;)

PC lakes are still too muddy, they are starting to clear along the deepest parts of the reeds and shore, PB is stained to 2-3 feet vis.  Caught one at lunch on a jerk bait..nothing else biting...too much wind to get beyond 20 feet

Well I went to punch bowl today.  Fished from 6:30 to 2:30 and only managed about 10 or 11 fish.  Very tough conditions.  Fish are scattered all over the place, caught some keepers but nothing descent.  Some areas have grass on the bottom the kind that fouls your bait and line and some areas have grass already growing.  I bet this summer it will be more grass than last year.  Didn't see any fish on beds.  Dean was headed out there this afternoon maybe he will do better and post a report.

Stan and Dean, how did you guys do at Punch Bowl.........Give us a report.  I only ended up catching 5 fish on Sunday and only 2 keepers.

Caught about 8 fish, 5 were keepers.  Alot of bluegill out there right now.  Left because the wind, should have brought my drift sock.

Post by: Dean on April 04, 2005, 01:38:38 PM
caught 7, 6 were keepers.  Kinda slow, but when I did get bites they bit well.  Windy for me too, so guess I need to take the anchor, or a drift sock, or both.

Guys I follow these posts religiously, guess it is kinda nostalgic for me, but is Mod 3 still open to fishing?
Title: Re: Base Lake reports
Post by: calincalif50 on April 05, 2005, 09:15:03 AM
Well aas far as I know its still open to fishing, although most of the original fish have either died off or were washed away during the El Nino year.  Last year there was an overpopulation of small fish with an occassional larger one,  but haven't heard of anyone fishing Mod 3 this year at all.   Guess I'll have to take a drive and check it out...maybe today durging lunch since that's how I spend my lunch hours... ~cf  what else is there

Lunch hours spent fishing  :-* thats the only way to go  ~c~ It was quite a ways out there but we used to go for a change up. I caught a 7.2 out of that little pond back in 85' we used to hit it with waders. The best place was where the road went across it.

I think Adrian is a little tied up with family these days.  He said he is putting most of his fishing time towards Gold Coast this year with an occasional base trny.

Sounds reasonable.

Eva, Chuck's wife called to ask when the next trny and meeting was,  so maybe he'lll be a participant this time around.  I think I'll take a fast run to Mod 3 today at lunch and see what's up.  Should only take me about 15 to get there from the clinic

Ok...went to Mod 3 to see what's up, water is stained  ut vis is about 3 foot..better than Pine canyons.  TRried a jig, senko, jerk bait, worm and nothing..spent 45 minutes fishing along hte edges and in the middel.  No signs of fish anywhere, not even little fry.  Thinking maybe the fish are no more or they are waiting for nighfall.  Still It got me away from the office for lunch

Thanks for checking on it for me ;) I used to love that little lake. Are you all seeing fry and spawning activity in the other lakes?

Someone should check out Mod 3 in a boat.  I fished that lake in October 03 and caught some nice fish.  I have caught an 8.0lb fish out of there and numerous fish in the 3-4lb range.  I also had a fish try and eat a smaller fish that I was reeling in and it was over 8 lbs for sure.  I have not been there in awhile since everyone said there was a fish kill last year.

lots of fry in the other lakes.  3 is so over grown now its nearly impossible to get a boat in there

Post by: Dean on April 05, 2005, 11:46:24 PM
Bad news from the front (of the boat)...   The bite I had going the other day is gone, and so is any bite I tried to find for 3.5 hours!  Deep, or shallow... dropshot drag, shake, senko deadstick, splitshot 2" grub... NO TAKERS!  I hope the weather stabilizes before Saturday.

It was 78degrees yesterday, and 38 degrees this morning at 0600.  It is not supposed to get down to 38 degrees in April!  Someone please fix the thermostat!

Well it must have been closer to 32 as I had frost on the truck this am.  What's up with this weather?? ~sun is what we want and lots of it
Title: Re: Base Lake reports
Post by: Dean on April 06, 2005, 03:43:28 PM
The radio said 78, but not sure where in relation to the base.  My thermometer said 38 though, and I froze my hands getting the dogs water, so I'm thinking it was at least that cold.  Definitely too cold for April.  This year has been SO unstable.  Every time the bite gets good at Casitas, Cachuma, just about everywhere, something changes and shuts them down.

Went to Pine CAnyon 1 today at lunch time...what a way to spend lunch..anyhow caught one dink, and was hit hard twice in two seperate locations but no hook up.  The lake now has about 4 inches vis, and I was using black senkos, so the clarity below must be better, along the edges its about 6-8 inches vis.  Caught the dink along the shore in the middle under the tree, and hit hard down by the big tree on the corner just as you turn to the tables

Post by: calincalif50 on April 07, 2005, 04:33:35 PM
PC 1 today, usual location under the tree on the corner...what a hawg...must have been a good 11 inches, compared to the ones I was catching earlier in the week this was a hawg... :roll2: :roll2: :roll2:

wind was howling so the tree had the only shelter from the wind.

We figured with no fish at 2:30 why wait.  So we did indeed bail.  I'm sure it was at leastr a huge win.

Caught fish on a senko in 15 to 18 feet of water. Switched to a spinner because I'm that way caught in less than 6 feet of water just having fun. My front depht finder was out and I kept having to guess where I was. >:( >:(

Brian, does your console depth finder have a swivel?  If so when your front one goes out you can swivel the other around so that you can see it from the front of the boat.  If your looking to get a new depth finder for the front of your boat you can't beat the prices at gpscity.com, I got a new Garmin 240 for the front of my boat for $122 that's cheap compared to anywhere else.

Hey Cal, who do I need to turn that letter into?  What's the building number or office number?

You turn the letter into Services Sqd.  The building I beleive is the one across from 11777.

I'm meeting Tony Friday morning to do some fishing at either lake 1 or 2.

Went to lake #1 yesterday afternoon, fished from 1645 to 2000 and caught about 20 fish.  Nothing big a few that were keepers.  It was windy and kind of a slow bite.  Caught 3 on blades about 5 or 6 on senkos and the rest on drop-shot.

Hit lake one today, tons of 11" fish and managed to get about 6 that were at  least keepers this time.  Not big but a limit any way.

Anyone going to any lake bigger than the base on Sunday or Monday

Was at punchbowl in July and had one great day, lots of bass and about a 1.5 lb bream on a dropshot ;D... then a few days later we went back and it was extremely slow, and there were quite a few bass dying. :(
