I just wanted to know how the forum is operating for everyone. We had a little trouble last night due to the wrong file being uploaded but was fixed this morning. Now that it is fixed I have made some changes and wonder how it is working. Just let me know if anything is out of the ordinary.
I already know about the smileys and a few other little things, I am looking for functional issues that you notice with posting, marking read or unread, searching etc...
At times, the reply box isn't loading up on the page for me. Seems like I have run into this b4 and we decided it was on my end. Funny how it happens most often just after you make changes though. I believe it has to do with my dial-up service and time-out issues.
I haven't had any problems. Everything seems to be working fine on my end.
someimtes when i try to go to this forum it shows up page cannot be displayed if i wait about 10 min i usually can get on here. yea i was like :shocking: when i got on here last night lol keep up the good work
Laurie, I am no computer whiz, but this is a description of the problem I have noticed. Sometimes It will say waiting for UB for a long time and any other site I go to it will come right up. :-\ I know part of the problems I am having at home are with my DSL. :bang There is static and they havent been able to find the bad spot in the line. ~rant
seems to be working fine now, this morning around 4am i was having trouble posting messages
It is not working I haven't caught a fish while logged on to this site yet ~rant

I made the changes at 12:30pm today CST lo I remember you having some issues with the page not loading before but loading on your computer isn't something that the server has control over unless it is not performing properly. I will check on the server performance just to make sure but I am getting a pretty quick page load time.

Thanks :) It helps to know there are folks out there that are trouble free just as much as it doesn't when folks are having issues lo

POE, page cannot be found is usually something that has to do with your server timing out. Your connection to this site or any other site is only as good as your internet service provider ISP.

Now the waiting for UB could be your browser letting you know that your connection is running a little slow. I did do a little preventative maintenance to the forum as well so that should help it.
We are sitting on a dedicated server. Not a virtual dedicated server (where you actually share the box with others) but one that we (and my web design clients) are the only sites that are on it. What that means is that we have the full amount of resources at our disposal.
We do have to from time to time evaluate how the server is working so here we are and I hope that if any one is having an issue they will let me know. As I said, I made some changes around 12:30 this afternoon and if you have noticed any strange things happening since then please let me know ;)
Laurie
:-\ where are the fishheads at the beginning of each forum? all I see is triangle with a line through it. ;D
I really like the new layout, my profile pic in the top is cool with the welcome message, but i am missing the UB symbol that was at the top that would take me to UB home from the Bass fishing forums area so i could enter tackle giveaway and sponsor sites.
I could read last night but couldn't post. Everytime I tried I was getting the following.
The following error or errors occurred while posting this message:
Your session timed out while posting. Please try to re-submit your message.
No subject was filled in.
The message body was left empty.
Now as of this morning after the changes things are going well. Load time even on dial up has been fast and smooth, No more page load issues, no issues with seeing new posts or read topics. I did notice for a time that my PM notification was not giving me the option to open it in a new window when I was getting PMs for a short time but that is no longer an issue.
The fish are gone as had been mentioned and I know those and the smilies and other nice to have items will be worked. :)
The spell checker window is now sized that when used I have to scroll to see the change ignore button on the bottom. Seams like the window size has been modified but it is just a little thing.
Bottom line so far is noticeably faster page load and post times, page is clean and centered with out having to resize the font and just seams to be crisper with the new look.
Fogy
The small sponsor banners are gone off of the side :'(
No issues on my end Laurie ... im pretty familiar with Simple Machines Forums functions and everything is working fine here ..... thanks for the upgrade ....
It seems to be working fine for me Laurie, however as other have mentioned, the sponsors are missing on the side bar and there doesn't appear to be a link back to the main UB page for reading articles, etc...
Ok, check out the main page of the forum and tell me if the sponsor banners are back and if the fish heads are back.....
I see them both so I am not sure what the issue is. I will be checking on the banner issue :-\
But let me know what you see...

You can click on the site logo at the top left to get to the main site.
The look is nice and crisp as Fogy stated.
Sponsor banners intact on left side of main page?
they are there now laurie ...
for me anyways ...
Missing "read more" link for Karyn Sanchez Recommends 5 Rods/Reels for Co-Anglers article on the front page.
OH Bassaholic karens article is a Bass Feed audio file ....
I found it by clicking that little green icon under the picture of her on the main page ...
her audio file is the second one from the top .....
Thanks Guys, I gotta eat and I will be back to get a little more done. If anyone else notices anything strange let me know ;)
Last night all of the pages were out of focus and nothing seemed to load up or open, might have something to do with ~beer~ ~beer~ ~beer~ ~beer~
Seriously........everything seems to be fine at my end today ;)
everything seems to be fine here
now sure if anyone has mentioned this...for example.......
I just clicked on the link to whackemn lures when it popped up at the top right if the screen...well Luretamer site came up.
now Im sure luretamer doesnt mind this...but whack em lures might not be to happy ~shade ;D
That seems to happen if the page isn't completely loaded before you click on the banner. There is a new release of the software that I am hoping helps to stop that :bang
Laurie is changing things again - this time her name. Is this camo so you can sneak around in here without being noticed :-\
Well if it I sure didn't do a good job of it... I got several PM's this morning asking me when the heck I had changed my name lo
The word got out - you'll have to make this a daily ritual if you want to remain undetectable ;) ;D
I don't have that much energy lo
I think I will leave it this way for a while ;)
Thanks You - now I can keep track of you ;D
Have a great weekend - will be back on later tonight for a bit - then off tomorrow for tourney weekend.
I am glad someone is keeping track of me... When I get lost I know who to call and I get lost quite often these days lo
I hope you have a good weekend and let us know how you do.....
i havent been able to find anything wrong with it....being new i didnt know what to expect but it has been nothing but outstanding.....ive learned a ton in just a few days its an awesome feeling giving and learning new tricks
Glad you are enjoying the site. If you fine something that you need help with just let us know.
I think I like this site. Everythings great and I've never had a problem. ;)
I know its been a while since the changes but I figured I would ask the question that has been lingering in my mind...
Did the size of the margins change for the forums? I get a MUCH smaller horizontal view... is it possible to change the format on my end??
I just liked it better when it filled the screen out from left to far right... because I have a 24" wide aspect screen...
Lastly, am I the only one seeing it this way guys?
Just curious...
Mike A!
Land O Lakes, FL
I have the same thing with my monitor at work, only using the middle half of the screen...
The template of the forum matches the main site and I don't have anything in place for you the user to change it on your end.
I have considered making it wider but there are still some old farts that like it to fit in their 600x800 monitors.
For now there are no solid plans to change it as that would be a several month long chore to change all of the parts of the site to a new template.
It takes for ever for pages to load. I am on dial up but this forum takes 10 times longer to load as other sites I visit. Its one of the reasons I have not been on here lately that much. It just takes to long to load
MotherNature load time is faster then usual for me, posting is working great only timed out 3 times and wasnt on long but thats ok. site looks great so my hats off to you and mike ~c~ ~c~ ~c~
Every time I work on the site I try to find ways to help it load quicker. Dial-up is one of those things that I can not compete with. I try to keep the items that are on the page such as graphics at a small size so that they don't take up so much load time but again I can't just get rid of them.
I am not trying to change the subject or point fingers but one of the things that helps out on load time is also to make sure that you do a disk clean up on a regular basis. It helps your computer work easier and it will also help the pages that you browse load quicker.
You computer under most cases stores cached copies of the graphics that are on our page and each time you visit it goes out and checks to make sure that those same graphics are still here and that you need them. Unfortunately it doesn't always discard the unnecessary files and you are left with a pile of poop that will eventually slow down your computer and your browsing ability.
Back on the topic... I will work on the load time again to see if we can't get it back to something that is a little more manageable.
thanks MotherNature you've done a fantastic job ;D ~c~ ~c~ ~c~
I understand your doing the best you can no doubt. I have a brand new PC and am pretty good with a computers and know about cookies and other related stuff. I am here to just let you know the load time is slow for dial up. I would love to be on cable or dsl but I have not been able to get it in my area yet. Well cable is available but very expensive. Just something to keep in mind. Load time between pages is almost 30 seconds. Other sites its less the 5 seconds. Just something I wanted you to be aware of.

Ok, I just read through all of the replies and no one mentioned an issue I seem to be having.
When I first come on to the site, the first place I go is to the forums and click on "Show new replies to your posts."
Lately, when I do that, it brings up posts that haven't had a reply since last May or June! If I refresh, then it brings up current posts or none at all, whatever the case may be.
Steve
That is the first thing I do as well Steve, but I haven't had a problem with it at all ???

Same here, I've had no problems like that, but.........there is one related thing that I have noticed. Sometimes somebody will reply to a thread that I have started or posted in, but it doesn't show up in my "Show new replies to your posts".
yesterday the fourms and links and what not were running fast. i cleaned out cookies today because in the evening it was slow i mean slow as molassass. today is no better. i had hoped the cookies were the problem seems to not be the case. i have dsl internet so i should be running fast. i checked a few other sites i go to and its like zip done no problem
Maybe it's the browser y'all are using? I sometimes use AOL( ~die~ ), only because of easier access to my favorites on the toolbar and I have to keep clicking to refresh. Now I use Comcast as a browser with IE, which is SOOOOOOO much faster.
Cable's nice, but not when you look for stuff with AOL( >:D )

Ok... from here on out when we are talking about the speed of the site I need to know a few things or we just won't be able to help at all...
What is your internet connection: DSL - DIAL UP - CABLE _ SATELLITE
How long to load: please post the numbers that are listed at the bottom of the page, example (Page created in 0.08 seconds with 10 queries.)
** the numbers above are a true representation of how long it took the page to load from the server. It does not take into account how long it takes to appear on your computer screen which has nothing to do with the server.
Time of day when problem occurred: this would be your time and zone 9pm est
How many members and guests were online:
These are all things that come into effect and without knowing the answers to these questions I am just guessing at what the trouble is.
Cable... it's my stupid AOL that was slowing it down. :bang
Mine was just fine, pretty fast all day, use time warner cable with wireless internet, same speed with 300 ppl or 10 ppl.

laurie you and mike always make a big differnce here on ub and we ~heart ya guys for it ;D thank you laurie
Mine seems to be loading a lot faster now. Before almost all loaded quickly, but every once in a while one page would be stubborn. Now it seems like all are loading quickly, good job again Laurie!! ~c~
Here you go Laurie, its 4:48 pm, 154 ppl on line and - "Page created in 0.08 seconds with 19 queries."
Is that fast enough. ;)
I can't wait to get home & try it on my dial-up...it will be late tonight though!

Before MotherNature updated the site I would be looking around UB and if I clicked on a thread before ALL of the logos/pictures were up on the screen (like sponsors logos or other), then I was directed to paypal :-\
Since the update everything seems to be working great and much faster.
BTW, this problem only happened on my works/company computer.

MAN...This thing is smoking fast again! Just like the old days! Thanks again Laurie!
I have asked around the site and seems everyone I have asked is having problem with the siggy block but I think Crash is the only one that lost her siggy all together.
Siggy's are a big issue with load time.... So we are looking at different options before we go in and fix everything dealing with those please tell Crash to be patient, we should have it figured out in the next day or two. :bang :bang
I will tell her. 8) lo
The rules below are the rules and I have allowed them to go slack. The ones in red especially. Way back when we had an issue with load time, we set up a limit on how large the siggy's could be and that limit has been exceeded on a regular basis now. I know it isn't on purpose, I think it is just because we don't think about it. The number of lines in the siggy's is outrageous. Folks are getting carried away with what they have there and personally it is annoyingly to read a thread and have to scroll through 3/4 of a page of siggys to read 1/4 of a page of info so we need to address that as well. The height and width of the siggys is another issue to be dealt with and it will all be addressed over the next couple of days.
I know when you all said you were having trouble with the load time of the site you were looking for an easy fix and unfortunately that is never the case. It usually involves some give and take on both parts. I am working on a new theme that will have less graphics so that it will load quicker without having to sacrifice the sponsor banners and there are some perks that are going to have to be reigned into the rules that have always been in place or removed.
Siggys are a prime candidate for site load time slacking on the viewer side. When the page is loading it goes from top to bottom and loads as it reads the calls to different items. When it reaches photobucket or shutterfly it waits for those images to load. Those are two of the slowest loading sites I have had to deal with in ages. In the past we had set it up so that members would load their siggys there because we were on a shared server with limited bandwidth and it was more cost effective for us that way. Now that we have a dedicated server with more bandwidth than we can use we need to start moving our siggys and avatars back to UB.
Oh... and Avatars... During the upgrade I noticed when I accidentally changed a setting that there are some folks that are uploading avatars that are HUGE so that is an issue as well...
As you can see there are a lot of little things that we will be doing over the next couple of weeks that will help the site overall... will it be painless? No but it needs to be done ;)

WOW!!! i really like the new look Laurie, the colors are amazing, now i know why you get to pick when it's time for boat shopping...lol
Cool I am glad you like it. I posted in Dock Talk about this change so that everyone can post there. I will be looking for the missing things... There are usually a couple of things that I forget to put back after an upgrade. So that is where you will want to put that type of thing.
Like the green cool. ~c~
working great for me
The site is working great. Pages display instantly . The light blue was tired and wore out . Not much of a baby blue person. Love the site even more now. Great job
Thanks Chris....
hunter green take come getting used to but i think it will work is DEFINANTLY a change and change is good
Wow, great almost knocked my eyes out. All we need now is camo!! 8)
nice color scheme laurie did we go overboard on the pink? maybe we need to get together and get mother nature a pink normans dd22 :roll2: oh by the way some of the smilies aren't loading in just in case ya didn't know but i like the rest of the colors that pinks gonna take some major getting use to though :)
Sorry I changed it to red and am on my way to another color still... there is a thread in Dock Talk with an on going conversation. Seems that some of the text is a little hard to read so we are trying to make it a little easier ;) The pink was to show which text we were talking about...
Green is horrible. I liked red. I can barely read the words with this lime green. I'm excited to see the next color.
Everything looks good on my end
Good deal Jason... Glad you like it.
laurie you might have forgotten to set the clock back an hour for day light savings time on the fourms but other then that looks great :)
Site looks great Laurie, love the new look... only thing, and I haven't been on until now so maybe this was already mentioned, but links aren't showing up in a different color from the rest of the text so they are a bit tough to pick out...
I noticed that too imp... they do turn red when you roll over them though.
All in all, the site looks much better and very calming, as someone else has mentioned. Kudos Momma!!! ~c~ ~c~ ~c~
I figure that just about everything in the forum is a clickable link so the different color is small kind of link the gray in the navigation live above: Bass Fishing Reports Forum > Welcome To The Ultimate Bass Fishing Forum > Announcements > Post reply ( Re: Feedback How is the forum operating? )
They really are supposed to change to red when you hover over them. I had it where they would change to green and someone pointed out that it leaned in too much and he was right. After I thought about it I changed it to red and I liked it so there it is lo
I am still looking for a color for the links... I may have to change the color of the background but I hate to do that ;( I like the dark gray...
Yep, before if there was a live link in a thread/post it used to be blue so it was easily seen, but now the live links are the same color as the normal text.
Yeah, that was what I was talking about too BK... Mother, I think you were referring to links like at the bottom of the page for page numbers, and to jump to the board adn stuff, but I meant links in posts. They do change to red when you move your mouse over them, but they used to stand out in a different color in posts (blue) so you knew they were links.
I really do like the new layout/look/color scheme though!
I know it's only a small thing, but I cannot re-upload my siggy >:( and there are others with the same issue. To me it's not that important, but to others it is :shocking:
laurie i have a color chart from geocities if you need just pm me and i'll give you the link to it if you feel it would help
The site looks great!! :) Love the smilies lo
