Title: Headwaters Shiner Trip
Post by: FlatsNBay on July 10, 2024, 06:10:12 PM
Just wrapped up a trip with Capt. Dan Hand from the popular Beyond Headwaters YouTube channel at Headwaters Lake. My mission was to get some pics for a shiner fishing article for one of the magazines.

First off, I gotta say that Dan is one solid guy and a heck of an angler and guide. He is a wealth of information and he was a tremendous help with my article. A great friendship was forged and looking forward to fishing with him again in the future.

We were on the water at sunrise and off we went. Artificial lures are more my speed so I brought a few rods along. I started with one of the new Berkely Swamp Lord popping frogs and connected with big fish of the day, a nice 6 pounder. (I didn't take any pics with my phone but took some for a future article with my big camera).

We transitioned to a hump between 2 deep water areas that was scattered with hydrilla. It was fast action for a short period and bass were blowing the shiners out of the water. It was pretty cool. At one point, we had 3 bass on at the same time. I would reel a bass in and then jump over to the next rod as the drags were screaming. It was a blast.

We moved to an area near a pump that had running water next to deep water and once again it was fast action for a while. We called it around 1130 with about 25 fish in the 2 to 5 lb class.

Super fun day!

So your Swamp Lord beat the Shiners? Cool!

My boat mechanic and his dad have property somewhere in Florida and travel down there to fish shiners. They've got pics with some major hawgs. I guess I'll have to try it sometime, but you can bet I'll have some of my lures.
