Title: NEW FORUM VERSION RELEASED
Post by: TechAdmin on June 05, 2023, 11:49:27 AM
Hello people, as previously announced we're finally running on SMF 2.1.
You may think it's just a 0.1 difference compared to the previous version but it's actually 10 years worth of difference, it's a complete rewrite both in backend and frontend with lots of database changes as well.
This update took me many hours and it was a very big task, one that you don't do so lightly on a forum as big as this, there are many things that can go wrong and get it stuck or mess with the data.
I understand it may come as a big surprise and you may not like certain things, but there IS time to improve on things, tweak colors, fonts and such.
You will need to spend some time to understand what all the new icons and things do, because it's quite a lot different from the previous version... This new theme is actually 12 into 1, because on the top right you can pick from 6 different versions and at the top left there's a switch (sun/moon icon thingy) for light/dark mode. Fear not, if you think some of them (objectively) suck, they can be tweaked, but for that we do need your feedback!
One very big new feature for members is the ability to MENTION people, which you can use by typing the @ symbol and starting to write the username, the system should then make a dropdown to appear with a list of possible matches. This WILL send a notification to the person, because we have proper notifications too now, you can see the bell at the top left, which will inform you about mentions, personal messages, topics you replied to and got more replies and whatnot.
All of the old content is still where it was, icons are there and even the recent topics, although the link for it has changed slightly https://www.ultimatebass.com/bass-fishing-forum/index.php?action=recent_top (https://www.ultimatebass.com/bass-fishing-forum/index.php?action=recent_top). You will find your Unread Posts, Unread Topics and Recent Topics by clicking on the avatar in the top left. This gives much more room to display things, even though it requires an additional interaction to show things, so it's a bit of a tradeoff really.
Attachments have been improved and now have drag and drop feature too.
There are many more things to list but I don't want to be too long, I still have plenty of work to do in the background as I am posting this.
Please DO report everything that you see that's clearly wrong or forgotten. Do feel free to ask questions and such, including the TapaTalk users, who should still be able to connect to the forum just fine.
This topic will be very heavily monitored but any and all comments are welcome (including negative feedback, if you want).
I go back to updating things, Flavio out.

EDIT:
Quote from: TechAdmin on June 13, 2023, 05:34:05 PMSo... DRAFTS are out!
They do... Precisely what you think they do, you can save them and post them later (within a week, they automatically delete after a week - this is not to clog our database), but you can save a draft of a personal message too. They also autosave every 30 seconds.

You will find your "Save Draft" button right alongside the preview and save ones. Feel free to go and experiment with them, ask away if you have doubts or problems!

Few quick things:

Positives:

Tapatalk seems to be working great

I like the ability to choose colors and a dark or light theme.

Don't mind the extra step to get to the unread posts etc.

Negatives:

Not really a negative but the one thing that seems to be missing (I could just be overlooking it somehow) is the "Go Down" and "Go Up" buttons on the "Entire Forum" page.

I found it really useful to see who was online at a quick glance and then jump back up to the top.

I see that they are still present in the individual threads which is much appreciated.

Looking good though and functioning really well right now.  Truly appreciate all the hard work you put in for us Flavio.

Flavio,

Wow, thank you for all the hard work you put into updating our forum  ~shade  I like what you've done so far and right now I can't think of anything negative to mention.  Like you mentioned I'm going to play around and get familiar with the New Settings.

Thank you again for getting this updated for us.

Very glad about that one specifically, it's a Beta version but seems to be working nonetheless.

I did mention that bit so you may have missed it ~b~

About the pink I'm not sure what you guys are referring to, you didn't give me any context at all... We do have a pink version of the theme, which is very... Pink ~b~ However the default variant is red, and the background on the side is a very light red to be easy on the eyes. If you think it's pink that's another story but I need you guys to elaborate more. Colors are totally up for debate, I'm not the biggest fan myself.

@TechAdmin Thanks for the clarification of where to find the "unread posts" clicky!  It's about the only button I use and didn't see it....

The pink color is the border shading on the page on the edges of the pages...

Been there, first time I used the new version I was like :help: Where is it?! ;D

It can be tweaked to be darker, it's almost pure red, just with transparency and such. The thing is if I make it too much darker it becomes VERY heavy on the eyes quickly.

And you can combine that with the sun/moon icon for dark/light mode, as I was saying earlier the theme has a total of 12 variants. Still, feedback is welcome and encouraged for every single one! ~cf

Flavio thanks for the hard work.  So far you have hit a homerun.  I'm sure it will take me awhile to try all the new options, but I do like the new look.  Thanks again!

Post by: FD on June 06, 2023, 02:02:59 AM
I've been running it on desktop, mobile, and TapaTalk.  So far I have had zero issues with function.

Flavio, as discussed a year ago, I'm still not a fan of the colors even though we do have 12 options.  We need to discuss the default color scheme for new visitors when the dust settles.  I don't like the red/pink as the primary. If I had a favorite, it would be the green/dark theme.

To All, there will be some organizational changes and new forums coming once all the bugs are worked out of the new version.

Thanks for all your hard work Flavio, it shows.  Be easy on me when you send the bill.... ;D  ;D

Those functions are still available. You will need to go to the very top left corner of your desktop UB forum screen, click on your UB Tag Name/Picture. Upon doing that, there will be a drop down menu with all of the functions you are looking for.

I noticed with the forum on Tapatalk today.

The order of replies in threads is out of order. It makes it confusing and a bit non-sensical to follow because an answer to a previous reply can be somewhere else in the thread. And the OP's original post that started the discussion can be in the middle or even at the end of the thread.

I haven't been able to get to my PC yet today so I'm not sure if this issue duplicates there.

@Capt. BassinLou thanks twice! ~read

@topdsm0138 Thanks! Looking forward to it!

Search works now. Like, truly works ;D I put one year as default amount of days to limit it. If you move it too far the system will love to show you results from 2007 and such, because those topics may have more views than the more recent ones. I can still tweak the search weight parameters but that's a minor thing.

Tapatalk will be undergoing maintenance momentarily to update it.
EDIT: updated to support next PHP version. Note to self: ModerationCenter.php missing string due to 2.1.3 update, may log errors.

Yes it can be changed and it's no big deal, however we do need to go through each one and see how to improve it. I put red because the UB logo is red, but I guess green can also work due to the bass? :-*
My idea is to let things to settle down a little and everyone can come in with suggestions and tweaks for all of them.

Thanks, although the theme is from SMF Tricks, I didn't code it myself (previous one had a LOT more code from myself). I did, however, manage to carry over all the customization and the features we had from the previous version, that was me and why it was so complicated ~sun To import the menu off the test forum was... Interesting to say the least.

first thing, looks great - I like the new schema

ok, so i think the font color scheme was mentioned.  It looks good just need a little tweak on the contrast between the headings and the font colors.  A little too hard to read.

also the primary background colors are a touch too bright, perhaps some transparency added would help.

other than that -- i have nothing.  Looks excellent!!

also, it looks like we cant edit our own content now?  i dont see the button but if i missed it please let me know. I was trying to edit my post above ^^^

I wanted to add a little to my post above.  The blue theme is much better now so maybe it was my old eyes or it was changed a bit.  Better means:  the primary background color looks softer now and the contrast and text color is much more readable.

again, great job

Triple dot, click it, there's your edit button and couple of others depending on your permissions.
There's also a quick edit button that allows you to edit without even having to load another page.

Thanks a LOT for the feedback, you were also very accurate, like Smallie_Stalker earlier! ~bb I think I might need to make some kind of post for the colors, so we can have all of that in one place.

@TechAdmin

I have no problem posting new videos, but it appears that video links posted before the upgrade no longer work.

See my thread about upgrades to the rod shop from last week.  The first post has the link that worked before the upgrade and no longer works. In the last post I had to put in the new link.

I was hoping we won't have to go back through all the older threads and repost new links.

Quote from: TechAdmin on June 08, 2023, 08:17:35 PMOk I think I fixed it on the dev forum, would it be ok to remove the YouTube BBC entirely and just drop the link into the posts so it gets picked up and embedded automatically? @FD
https://www.ultimatebass.com/totallyatestforum/index.php?topic=158468.0 (https://www.ultimatebass.com/totallyatestforum/index.php?topic=158468.0) (Remember test forum, not monitored)
@FD you missed this ~b~ I used the same system to embed on there, it's

I'm just asking whether the solution to automatically embed all of them is acceptable. If it is I can carry it over.
Otherwise I can mess with it more database-wise or even via php. There are ways.

@TechAdmin yes let's auto embed

Fix deployed! The YouTube BBC tag is removed, just drop the link in here in whatever format you want and it will automatically embed. It works unless you use *only* the ID, in which case it's not possible for it to figure where it comes from :surrender:

Issue noted - https://www.ultimatebass.com/bass-fishing-forum/index.php?board=244.0 (https://www.ultimatebass.com/bass-fishing-forum/index.php?board=244.0) has HTML in the description and it's no longer allowed to have that. This applies to all boards in fact, so either I somehow figure out how to allow HTML again or we have to convert those into BBC.
Priority will be given to images for sponsors. ETA - Monday.

Fixed all of them, that took... A while ~sweat
You may see board descriptions bigger than they used to, if that is the case please flush your browser cache. Complicated reasons but mainly due to security we cannot have HTML inside board descriptions, therefore I had to remove it from... Each... And every... Single... One. :surrender:
If I missed some please report it :-*

It definitely was and still is, we're not fully done yet.

So...

Feel free to go and experiment with them, ask away if you have doubts or problems!

excellent -- great job adjusting the transparency on the themes and colors.  nice.

I know this is probably the last thing on the list -- but dark mode might be a little too dark IMO

Post by: Larry Francis on June 18, 2023, 04:58:53 AM
Lots of revamping lately. Looks nice and is easy to use.

Just noticed the change in the state fishing reports. It appears they did away with State forums and the Chat blocks in them. I assume this was in effort to speed things back up.

It may just be a restart thing inside the thread but I am not sure. Maybe someone knows.

Also I am not sure how to add a picture when commenting on an existing thread?  Help.

@Larry Francis I merged your thread with the big announcement one so we have everything in one place.

A big cleanup is currently going on under the hood, we're re-organizing the board to give more importance/visibility to stuff that is still active and putting much of the old/inactive stuff into the Archive board. That's FD and Capt. BassinLou's doing, I'm sure they have a better idea of what they want to do with the State forums, so far it seems like they want to split them into macro regions - Southeast, Northeast, Central and Western.

As for myself I'm the guy doing all the tech-related things, you will find plenty of informations in the first post of this thread ~fff

Regarding images it hasn't really changed, it only improved because it also features drag&drop now, which was not a thing in the previous version. Click reply and you'll have the big reply page - attachments won't work in the quick reply right underneath the threads (or it wouldn't be a quick reply ~shade )

We have mentions, drafts, better attachments, notifications, lots of new features while I gave it absolutely everything to keep the previous ones.

Colors are not final, but feedback is welcome about everything, much like you are welcome back ;)

The state boards and chats still there just separated into 4 regions.  Click the southeastern region, Florida, Florida chat.

You were looking at the same time I was moving stuff around.

It's now possible to add files from the quick reply, just click on "Add Files" and it will load the whole drag&drop section, you won't lose the content of what you were posting PoPo

Tapatalk updated a little while ago and now I'm having problems. Before the update the timeline was fine but after the update the latest posts it shows are from yesterday and it just buffers without stopping.

Is it possible that the changes to the forum has broken the plugin or something to that effect, it is this just another issue on Tapatalk's end?

I left the tappatalk site and signed on to the desktop site (on my phone too). There is a place to acknowledge a new updated terms and conditions. I accepted. Tappatalk has worked fine since then for me.

I fixed some old HTML code in the registration agreement, did that force *everyone* to accept it again? That'd be some swearing on my end :surrender: There were no real changes other than removing some extremely old stuff and references to Laurie herself in there, I moved everything to Lee.

Also new banner for BAM in Dock Talk area, seems that the image is too big for the designated ad size. We might change the location or the image itself. If you see the image breaking the template (way too big) please flush your browser cache.
In the meantime, you can use code "X2023" for a big discount on Bass Anglers Magazine ~beer~

Very glad to hear this ~sun You're welcome :)

So, a bit of an update... The theme will be updated to version 1.2.4 possibly tomorrow and in the meantime the default color has been changed to dark green variant. @FD so it works, the author made it so flexible that it ended up having 2 settings that partially overlap one another, that's why it was a bit weird to change it ;D
