Title: Terminal Tackle Box Question
Post by: Larry Francis on May 20, 2022, 05:11:07 PM
So the Flambeau Tackle box I use for all my trinkets, Hooks, weights, beads, swivels, nails, whatever. When I turn it up on it's side to store in the slots in my boats tackle drawer seems to get some stuff getting mixed in the slots.

What are others using that does not allow even the smallest stuff leave it's slot?

Thanks

On the cheaper side (under $10) I have these and they work perfect.

On the (much) more expensive side is the Plano Edge Series Terminal 3700 box. I hear these are excellent with a slightly thinner profile:

You can find this Plano box much cheaper on Amazon. For some reason I couldn't copy and paste the link so I would check there if you like the Plano box better.

Larry, this box came from Academy Sports.  Don't remember the part number but it works great and does not spill and stuff stays in place.  UPDATE:  here is a link to the item at Academy.

I don't have any issues with my Plano 3700 ProLatch boxes. Everything stays in it's assigned sections.

You can lay a layer of soft foam in the lid that will hold everything in place.

Can take some packing tape and lay across the inside of the lid where the rows hit. Prob 4 strips across should do. If 1 strip isn't quite enough add another on top.

Tried this and it did not really work. there is a bow in the lid that creates about a 1/8 gap so tape or foam are not likely going to help this box.  Think I need one with a solid plastic lid so looking at other options

Larry, the Academy terminal box I posted has section walls that are a bit higher than the bottom of the box and then fit snugly into the molded top.  This seems to keep stuff from spilling out or jumping into another section.  This works quite well and the stuff stays put. I actually have 2 boxes.  One in the boat and another in my back up storage cabinet.  Even stored on the sides nothing has spilled.

Ahh ok. I've used the academy box and for $14 it's worked well!

I've found here in FL heat, doesn't matter if its Plano or Flambeau, if you use one of those soft tackle bags, the hard box will still warp due to the heat. Can't really speak for below deck storage because I've never had any of that. Just irritating having to spend 10 bucks on the same boxes, over and over, for the same issues.

In a situation like that you might want to consider a soft-sided tackle binder. You can fit a surprising amount of tackle if you plan ahead.  :-*

So I tried this idea and a piece of foam was $1.10 at JoAnn Fabrics (gas was more getting there) and this seems to work really good. I used some 2 sided tape I had already and it is going to work pretty good I think. Thanks for the advice everyone .

Yep, that's what I do, and EVA sheet foam can be bought at most crafts stores and in a variety of colors. Although not all stores will have them, the sheet foam also is available in different thicknesses too. Most will be 2mm thick, but I have been able to find 3 mm, and 6mm in some stores. Hobby Lobby has had about the best for foam sheet if you have one near you.

Some foam sheets have an adhesive on one side and there are spray adhesives sold for use with the foam, also sold in those crafts stores. 3M produces a very good one.

I use the sheet foam for making flies, which is how I knew where to find it, and have used it in fly boxes to keep the flies in place!  lo

Amazon also has foam sheets of different thicknesses. I bought a couple last year for a non fishing related news but could see where they could be used for this.

Best box been using for years, nothing ever moves from its slot and no foam to deal with, can get heavy with all the lead and be careful how hard you drop it back into the locker of your boat had 1 break at the hinge but not bad for 15 yrs of abuse.
this address to see inner pic detail...https://www.fleetfarm.com/detail/plano-rustrictor-terminal-tackle-box/0000000343696
and this is the least expensive place you can still buy from.

These Buzbe boxes are modular. You can move the containers around and put in different sizes. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230209/cfa0455ead48b761bb9cf5f3c7cd297e.jpg)

I know it was kind of an old original post, but the hooks and swivels getting out of place in the oldschool Plano boxes drove me nuts, too.

I switched to the Plano Edge 3700 Thin boxes for most of my stuff. I still have spinnerbaits in an oldschool spinnerbait box, and jigs in the Edge jig box (it's the size of their regular 3700), but ALL my other hard baits are in 3700 Thin boxes. Their Edge Terminal Tackle box is the same size as the 3700 Thins, and those are what I use for all my hooks and weights. When you multiply the size difference of the thin boxes times all the boxes you have, you end up saving a shocking amount of space in the boat. I don't have a lot of storage in my boat, so anywhere I can save a little space, I have to do it. Those boxes are not cheap, I hated dropping that much $$ on some boxes, but I'm glad I did now.
The terminal tackleboxes have individual little boxes in them, kind of like the Buzbe (another excellent box), but the ones in the Plano have individual lids on them. Not a factor in my opinion, as long as stuff stays put, an extra lid isn't needed, but it is nice if you decide you just want to pull a hook box out of the tacklebox to put in your pocket if you just want to go to a pond and wet a line for a little while. All of the little boxes are a friction fit into slots in the big box, so nothing slides around in there if you have little boxes that are out.
