Well I used to be pretty good at this, and I plan on doing it again this week. This 7-01 came on Christmas Day, 2018-

And I've fished on some pretty cold days-

That big bass came on a 3-1/2" tube fished on a shakey head. The second one in the snow came on a tube with a drop shot. The secret is SLOWWW. Unless the bass tell you otherwise. That means SPINNERBAIT, again, fished slow. I also really like a Hula Grub (Chompers) too. A Ned Rig TRD works. Anything small and SLOWWWW.
Good luck.

Repeat slow.
I really like the Hula Grub on a 1/4 oz. jighead.

Also a weighted jerkbait worked at 1 minute slight jerks.

If the pond isn't full of stumps(or other snaggy cover) try a rattletrap ripped up off the bottom then allowed to settle before repeating.

Use a single Colorado blade spinnerbait slow rolled along the bottom if you do have snags.

If using soft plastics scent applied too(or already in the plastic) can be a huge help.

Jerk, jerk long pause. Suspending Jerkbait.

I fished in the afternoon, especially if there was sun to warm the shallows a little. My usual baits were a 3 in. tube and a 2-3 in. white Sassy Shad. Two alternatives were a single twister tail grub and a spade tail grub.

I'm thinking about throwing tube's and Ned rig, maybe a shallow dive square bill.

used to also like the bitsy bug with the small strike king pork frog.  that browngreen jig with a green pork frog  ... soaked.  shaken.  soaked... repeat got bit.prefer the 4" yamomoto hula grub (softer)... the chompers plastic is somethng I think is too hard.

as for that jerkbait:  once caught 5 fish on 6 casts.  in an hour and 20 minutes from same spot.  just 'ticking' the suspending rogue enough to make it slightly flash...  the fish would come find it.  but taking 10 - 15 minutes for a cast was 'something else'.  by the way, much easier to do this from the bank than from a boat.
that was back when the ice came off the ponds usually by St Patties Day... and I hadn't been out since maybe first few days of November.

now?  if water temps go into mid-40's that really really cold.  but really what you look for as it does a number on the shad.  and the jerkbait bite, trap bite gets fun.

Fish deep cover. With a really slow technique. Squarebill should be left home. Coldfront is dead on with 15 minute casts.

Don't use that hula grub thing it doesn't work up here in the North.  ::)
I've only won two tourneys with it.  ~shhh

Here in N.C. I fish ponds and the bass will chase lipless cranks, ned rigs and spinners.  I've caught fish this past week and will fish this Saturday temps high 60's .  Some fish stay shallow until it ice's up so you go when you can and you throw what you're confident with.  Slow fishing, maybe, or maybe not.

I could not agree more, SLOW way down.  Jerk long pause, jerk jerk long pause.  I do this with plastics.  Either look for the base of sharp drop offs, or among the thickest cover you can find still around.  Finally don't fish Florida after a hard cold spell.  Florida strain bass will have lock jaw, much more then the northern strain.

Fishing slow is for patient people, fish fast or at least moderate if the fish are hungry they will find your lure!
