I have been working with one of our members, named BigJim on a custom jig project.  I have been utilizing Jim for a couple of years now because of his attention to detail and quality of work.

Observing Peacocks over the years I had a few ideas in mind and BigJim was up to the task to help me out.

Nice job! I think the "bucktail jig" truly is a lost art in freshwater, but still effective all these years later. The peacock bass and snakeheads love them.

Keep posting on the tackle box forum Jim. Since these jigs were made for targeting Pea's I figured I would post these pics on here as well since we have Peacock bass forum.  :-*

It's certainly not as popular as it once was, as there's many more choices now and new lures come out all the time.  I tie a lot of jigs with bucktail too, but there is a difference between these various types of hairs, both natural and synthetic. I think bucktail is often overlooked for bass fishing, but it's still very popular for Striped Bass, even in freshwater, and for various saltwater species.

I know many who tie hair jigs for bass, particularly Smallmouth Bass, who use bucktail, but they tend to only use them in colder water situations, and to me that's a mistake. They say that they have "better" options for warmer water, and that's possibly true and mostly personal preference, but I like having more options and choices, so usually carry some bucktail jigs when chasing bass. It never hurts to cast something the fish likely may not have seen. There's also Striped Bass in the lake here, and I use the same lures for each.

These Peacock bass jigs for Lou are tied with a combination of synthetic hairs. I'm not real big on synthetic hairs, as many don't have good movement, but I think they'll work well for this use and what I used has much better movement than most.  ;) "Polar Fibre" is one such hair, marketed by some folks who are in S. Africa, (Fishient Group). They market various fly tying materials and fly fishing products. I also used some craft fur products, some that can be obtained in craft stores and some that is also sold as a fly/jig tying product. I'm a bit picky about what I use anyway. They're not all the same, that's for sure.  ~shade

Bucktail hair would work too I'm sure, but this synthetic hair should last longer.  ~gf
