So I have noticed that my boat, which has a new Mercury 150 four stroke, was running at higher RPMs than normal. Top speed I am usually running about 5,500-6,000, well it was buried at 7,000. I would usually stop so we could get into the water and swim and then pull kids on the tube. This has been happening the last few times. As we all know running higher RPMs is not good. The first time I text two people on here I trust (and have their phone numbers!) and they gave me good advice to check some things.
Anyways, I had the boat out yesterday running my daughter and her friends on the tube and same thing was going on. So for the heck of it, I tapped the plastic on the Tach and the RPM's returned to normal lo
I don't know if I have a loose wire or the guage is messed up but I had to laugh. Made me feel better that it is fine.
The gauges aren't "top of the line".....my volt meter gauge sticks a lot and it has since it was new.

Could be the tach itself, but I'd dig into it and check all of the connections.

X2 I had this same issue with my Yamaha 150 on my Stratos when I first bought it. I could tap on it while running and it would go back to normal etc. I had a loose connection on the tach itself. It was an easy check and fix.
Good luck in getting it squared away.
