Title: Hunting Season 2018
Post by: Deadeye on September 03, 2018, 04:35:31 AM
Getting to be that time of year again.

This year will be different for me as I leased 80 acres to start a Hunt Club with my SIL. Something to pass along the Hunting Heritage that I grew up doing.

We called it New Heritage Hunt Club.

It is located in the Florida Panhandle and is made up of Planted Pines and Cypress Swamp.

So far I have started some Food Plots by spreading Lime to balance the PH and discing it in.

The weekend of the 22nd will be up there seeding the plots with a mixture of things from Whitetail Insitute. Imperial Clover, No Plow, Winter Greens, and Beets & Greens.

Should give us both early and late season attraction. Archery starts Oct 20 and Gun starts Dec then runs thru Feb.

Some pics of the Sportsman getting ready to go to work and some plot pics. I bought a Ground Hog Max ATV Disc to break up the ground and it does great.

A major storm system had just passed through the day I got there and the ground was soaked in some places making discing tough. Other areas it had dried out and came out great. Will follow up with more pics as the plots come along.

Looks like a great spot for deer hunting Fred. You going to hunt for a blind or a tree stand?

Nice. Get you something out there that will stop them cold in their tracks. I hunt some narrow lanes and man its challenge sometimes. I have some good bucks on my camera near my bow stand. Hopefully I can stick one early and then I can work on my rifle stand for a bigger buck. It would be awesome to have two deer down by mid October then I could get back to fishing.  ;D Last year the loggers messed me up big time but was able to get a an arrow in a doe and dropped a small buck during primitive season before the screwed me all up. Hopefully I'll have a better season this year. I might have to get Susie out there to put some meat in the freezer. Her record on the stand is pretty impressive.

Lip the former lease owners left a nice blind and I am setting up another that I have. I also have two tree stands I am putting up. A Single man and a Double man ladder stands.

There are 2-3 other sites we plan to developed time goes on. My SIL fell in love with the bottom so I told him he could do whatever he wanted there. He had plans for a box blind and a tri-pod. I also plan to replace my small blind with a tri-pod to be able to see more area, and another tri-pod where a water source is.

Took the pup out yesterday to finalize my 2nd stand. Gonna be her first year bird chasing, but by the way she reacts to deer blood at home I am thinking she might be a hell of a tracker!

DB looks like you've got a great area there to hunt.

I had dogs that may have made great blood trailers but where I was raised they shot dogs that trailed deer. Funny how much different it is here in the south! Here a good Deer Dog is worth it's weight in Gold.

I see that style of hunting tradition dying out though as lands become smaller and smaller by growth. In the old days you could let the dogs run, now lots of folks don't want dogs on their land.

I've tried the Dog style and it's not for me.

Having a good Blood Trailer is a whole different thing. Many times I would of loved to have a Blood Trailer to help me find a deer that otherwise got lost.

Good LUck with the upcoming season.

Thanks, the drop down gun rest will have camo netting on it to cover my legs. We don't have rifle hunting here and I don't have a shotgun permit for this location so it'll be bow or crossbow. With my work schedule I think I'll be out with both early season but as work gets busier (oil refinery in the winter) I'm gonna harvest the first one I can to fill the freezer, even if I have to use the crossbow.

If my SUV ever gets done (AC Compressor blew up, great timing) I plan to load and head up there today.

Tomorrow's plan is to Fert/Disc/Drag/Seed at least 3 of the sites and maybe 4. I'd like to get them all done, but got to be realistic and not going to go crazy and overheat myself until I puke like last time.

Like the Wife said, If I got to make another Trip- I got to make another Trip.

Want it all done by the end of next weekend though, no matter what.

Well I had enough time by working all I could Saturday and not leaving until 4:30 pm Sunday to get 6 food plots done (2 at each stand site), and set one of the ladder stands and put my small blind up.

How they looked before fertilizer and discing.

Got up to check the cams, Hunt a bit, and see if the Hurricane hurt us.

We did get some damage but not a lot. What we have the SIL and I plan to go clean up this weekend.

I got some good pics on the cams. Now to see one while hunting.

The small blind in some of the pics I tried to hunt out of. Yeah not happening. Supposed to be a One Man Blind, more like One Small Kid Blind. This old man back can't take sitting hunched over like that.

I am replacing it with a Tripod Stand. The trees are way to small for a ladder stand.

Back from a Work Weekend at the property. We got all the down trees cut up and our two stands set up.

Got a new pic of one of the big boys we are calling Loppy due to his left side ear being lopped off about half way out. Maybe a coyote got him when he was younger.

Speaking of coyotes we put a mandatory See One Kill One on them. There is a big Pack that howl there at night and we want them gone. They have been as close as 150 yards from us at night.

Pics of Loppy and my new stand. The blind around the Stand makes it blend in pretty good.

That 9 pointer is at the meat locker the doe I got the other night I let sit in the cooler on ice over night, deboned her yesterday and put some roasts and stew/jerky meat in the freezer and ground the rest up and let rest in the fridge.  Got it out and mixed up the way I like, 20lbs deer/10lbs fatty burger like 70% and blend it up.  Got it sitting in the fridge again getting ready to wrap it up.  Gonna have lots of good  :food this year  ~bb

Post by: Deadeye on November 28, 2018, 08:49:55 AM
Was at our Property last weekend with the SIL for the Early Gun and Doe Days. We saw none. Cams showed just about all our deer went Nocturnal and others are telling me the same thing.

We weach at least had an encounter with deer, him getting blown at by a deer he couldn't see that got downwind of him, and me walking up on one that was bedded 50 yards from where I had sat all morning into afternoon.

Did get some good pics of our one deer we call The Big 8. Like he was teasing us posing for the Cam.

While the Property being 6 hrs away does make for a great Get-Away time, it also sucks because there are times I'd love just to sneak out for a couple of hrs and it's to far to do that.

I plan to head back up the day after Christmas (Buck and Doe both in that weekend) and hunt until New Years Eve. We have been invited to a super nice Party again this year and I don't want to miss it.

Well the plan it to watch the Radar Weather Report, which was terrible with 70-90% Rain and has now dropped to 40%, and decide tomorrow what we are doing. The Boy has already requested the days off, so we will probably go either way.

Yep Ron there was a time when to go hunting all I did was step out the back door and go.

The Boy got a Doe this past weekend, so that broke the ice on the Property. Once again we would get pics at night and are just once again starting to get some on day too.

Some dog is running loose and howls all over our property and those surrounding us, go pics of him too.

Worse thing has been the Coyotes. We thought the Dog might of chased them off after not hearing them the first two nights, but on the last light they fired up BIG TIME and CLOSE too.

One found the Boy's doe gut pile and yipped once and it seemed like the entire woods around us came to life. I mean like it's dark and they are 20-100 yards away from you. They woke me up 3-4 times during the night with their noise. I left before daylight to get back home and the Boy said at 30 mins before daylight they were sounding off all over the place.

Sounds like we need to do a Coyote Hunt.

Up and ready to head back up for another try at a Buck.

The last two weeks of January through the first two weeks of February are supposed to be the Rut Periods in the Panhandle Area. I'm going up today through Thursday and then back home for a Family Vaca, then hope to get back up once more for another week before season ends.

Hope I'm able to get it done this trip.

Saw Deer two days but no Buck to shoot. Got Daytime Pics of one of our Bigger Bucks, that's a first, and they are making scrapes.

On Vaca with the Family this week but will be back up for the last weekend.

Deadeye, what did you use for discing?

My season was bad slow compared to last year. This year the season began with me seeing tons of deer, but letting the young bucks and does walk hoping for big boy to come out. Once the rut was over and it was time to put some meat in the freezer, they had gone nocturnal on us. I ended up with one big doe and one of my son in laws killed a doe also.

We have a few very nice 2 1/2 year old bucks that may be monsters in a year or two. We also have a perfect 10 point that looks no more than a couple of years old...really anxious to see if he made it to live another year and put on more size.

Well my boy got one of the bigger bucks and the trail camera caught a lot of it.

The buck walked into the field at 12:01, checked his scrape then headed for a Doe that was there.

At 12:31 he came back and that was just as the boy was easing in to have a look.

Perfect timing.

Well my First Deer Season at the new property is done. I had 3 bucks with my Crosshairs on them, but they were all Spikes and nothing I would shoot or were even legal.

The last night the Coyotes howled in an almost perfect circle around the Camp at about 50 yards away. Only Once and one after the other until the circle was complete. Guess they were letting me know they were still there. I just went back to sleep.

Spring Gobbler is next. Gives me a chance  learn the property better.

Spring Gobbler has been open for a couple of weeks but this is my first chance to get some time to get up there. So tomorrow I am heading up for a couple of days. Really haven't see all that much in the way of Turkey on the Property, which is a real surprise as they are mostly everywhere down here.

I'll give it a couple of days walking and learning the property better and see what happens.

I thought there was a chance to gain permission to hunt on the neighbors property, but after we spoke about it he let me know he decided to lease his ground to 3 guys. So that is now a Big NO for hunting on it. We were thinking about a deal where I would take care of the old homestead lawn and buildings and in exchange we would be able to stay their for our Camp and also have access to the Property, but doesn't look like that is going to happen now.

Probably just as well as that would of tied me into a Commitment of going up there 1-2 times a month year round and that could transfer into some real Money in Gas Prices.

At the end of this 3-year Lease I'll decide if it is worth it or if it is better to spend more money UpFront on the Lease but save Money by not having to Travel as far to Hunt. We got a great price on the Lease, but if I join a Club 2 hours away for Twice the Amount I'd actually probably be money ahead. Only difference is I would have to agree to Their Rules instead of being able to Make My Own.

We'll see.

Well 2 Days of Walking the Property taught me a lot more about it. Found two good spots deep in the Swamp for a ladder stand where I can see pretty good. Found out just how thick the one section of swamp really is  :'(

Didn't see any sign of Turkeys at all. But the Clover I planted last Fall is really starting to take off now. I plan to add more of it in more locations  and that should help to bring them in and hold the deer better as well.

Plans are now for having 4-5 Clover Plots and 4 Corn Feeders. That should really help to hold the Game on our piece.
This will end the 2018-2019 Season. Thanks for following along.
