Title: Boat explodes after pumping gas into fishing rod holder!
Post by: Princeton_Man on June 07, 2017, 07:58:02 AM
While the title isn't surprising... the act itself is unbelievable.  ~b~

Obviously they did not know enough about the boat to have have it out on the water in the first place.

They could have all simply stayed off the boat and let it be towed but, they decided to follow up one big mistake with a second one!  ~b~

They are lucky to be alive. I see one of them is in the hospital at Myrtle Beach maybe Bud should run by there and instruct him on how to fill up a boat.  ~b~

I like the comments....

"Let stupid pump gas where they want. Boom, no more stupid"

This is sad and I'm glad everyone is okay. It could have been much worse, especially if the pumps were to go next!!!

Watch out guys, their out there amount us and will take you down with them.

I have to wonder? Was this the first time he refueled? Are the rod holders and has cap that similar? Did he think, wow the cap is already off... COOL ? I mean what the hell led up to this happening?

You are so right Mike they were all old enough to know that any gas tanks has a cap on it (https://www.ultimatebass.com/bass-fishing-forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi3.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy89%2Flipripper%2FRazz%2520smillies%2Fthtn.jpg&hash=d4815b46d68ae2795485e990d66a994806d9a2e0) (http://s3.photobucket.com/user/lipripper/media/Razz%20smillies/thtn.jpg.html)

I firmly believe we could help right what's wrong with America if we took warning labels off of everything for the next 8/10 years

Stupidity is what got warning labels in the first place.  I remember teaching safety in the auto shop and mentioning some of them.  Like the person who picked up their running lawn mower to place on the framing they built to chop their hedges.  I forget how much they settled for but that is where the keep hands and feet from under deck on it.  The one where the female at McDonald's spilled the coffee on herself.  She settled for some amount and caution contents may be hot appeared on the cups.
I am still trying to process twenty eight gallons of gas in the rod holder.  I can't think of any gas tank that does not have a screw off cap.

Well it's easy to judge, but I've done a few stupid things in my time too.  A few weeks ago I asked my GROWN son to put the drain plug in for me, and he was happy to help the old man.
After I launched, I quickly suspected he hadn't done it.  I pulled up on the bank, backed the trailer down and pulled the boat onto the trailer so it could finish draining.  He had put the plug in the live well drain!  He's good at computers though.  :)
Maybe it was something like that.  Maybe the boat owner took the gas cap off and one of the other guys offered to fill it, not knowing MUCH.  Maybe?  Or stupid is another way to go.

When you are the Captain of your vessel...you are responsible for every little thing.  Believe it or not this happens all the time! Same exact thing happened in Pompano Beach at the city ramps a few years back.

When I teach chapter two in the Safe boating ABS class...I try to bring home the fact that modern boats rarely sink, but have no problem burning!

When inspecting vessels I look for burn points. One of the big burn points is the battery.  I can't tell you how many times I've seen batteries that aren't strapped down.  One heavy wake and the batteries tip and ....boom.

I remember the lawnmower hedge trimming incident. :o :shocking:

It's a form of population control.

This is a sad story any way you read it. Burns are the worst injury. I have to believe this boat was large to keep pumping that amount of gas and not get suspicious. Maybe the rod holder had a cover. My bass boat gas filler cap is just a plastic snap-on with a hinge. Everyone is ignorant in some subject. We all can do the 20-20 hind sight but we should also feel their pain. I hope they have a quick recovery. I have one fishing buddy who smokes -- I make him fish from the back near the gas tank and I fish up front -- I believe in safety first :)

That's a good perspective Pat. Prayers to those people and their families.
