Title: Ultrex or Power Pole
Post by: steve76 on April 14, 2017, 08:14:21 PM
I can only run one power pole on my boat so I don't void the warranty. So if you had the choice would you run only one pole or go with the new Minn Kota Ultrex with the improved anchor lock? I fish shallow mostly for bass but do a lot of tree dipping in the summer for crappie in deeper water. My boat is a 2016 Crestliner VT 17. I can't afford to do both right now.

I would go with the Ultrex.
There is just so much that thing can do why limit yourself to only being able to lock yourself in one spot with the poles in 10' of water.
Just my .02

Only bad thing I can see about using the Anchor Lock when fishing shallow is the extra noise from it turning on and off. With a PP once you lock it down your done.

It would be cool to have both, but if I could only have one I would get the PP. Why? Like you I fish mainly for Bass in shallow water. If I fished contour lines (Don't get to do that much here in Fl) or fished deeper water a lot I would get the other.

Thanks guy's, It looks like  no one has the Ultrex in stock. Thinking about using a manual shallow water anchor system with the Ultrex

Good choice, best of both worlds!!

That would work.

I have a manual Push Stick that I bought some time back. I have found in a soft bottom it works "ok" if the wind is not blowing to hard. In a Hard Bottom I can't push it hard enough to make it stick.

Also found that if the stick is 7 ft long you can use it in about 3-4 ft deep water. Much deeper than that I have trouble getting it to stick fast.

I'd see the ultrex as shining in current, wind, open water spots.
for close quarters fishing, etc, I guess i wouldn't see it as better necessarily than current TM...

power poles have their place.  just not in my limited resources world...

Ended up getting a 12' Talon. I  rarely fish deeper than that and didn't want to carry the poles for manual  anchors in the boat since it already gets a little crowded in there.

Nice. Let us know how you like it after you have had a chance to use it for a bit.

I will, hopefully this coming weekend. I am on vacation for the next couple weeks so I hope to get the boat wet quite a bit.
