Has anyone been to Campti lately. We have a tournament out there this saturday.I never been down there. Any help on tactics or general areas. Me and a friend fished the fruit jar with Reagan. We caught four fish all night worth 5.88.All of them were dinks except for a 3 pounder and one was a beautiful little Kentucky. I think there was only three limits .Winning bag was 14.16. The water level was low and I think it pushed the fish out a little, lots a grass.
Thanks Alot,
Danny
as I was saying, try fishing the main channel eges with a 10-12 inch red shad worm. usually on the outside turns. Also try a baby bass cinko texas rigged. You just about have to hit them in the head to get them to bite. I fished a tourn. last year at this time it took about 12 lbs to win on this pattern......Good luck.
Does anybody have a fishing report, will head to Campti in a couple weeks?
Hey Mike, I have a second hand report for ya. I talked with a buddy of mine last night and here is what he has had lately. He fished the flats right off the main channel up toward gvmt ditch, however only a mile or two north of the bridge(just to give you a direction). He says the "middle" of the flats with a pearl white fluke pitched to the trees and let it sink, with for the bite. Also he said he caught several "southern" pike up there. Good luck
lol...well the Freeze will screw that pattern...Who else is fishing Media....believe me when i tell you this..i have about 5 more trips planned for that heap of water..and liek i said to others: THAT LAKE IS WORSE THAN CROSS!!
feneky freaky fish on that lake there is...i really need some assistance on that water..:(
CADE
Cade, I am by no means very good on Black Lake but here is a couple of places to try. First, I have heard that the bank line starting at the bridge and heading south is good this time of year. I have never fished it, but more than one person has told me that.
The second will take some explaining...you head south in the channel and come out into the first open lake. Well, near the end of this open area, just before going into the channel (fairly hard right turn) you can see on the left an semi-open pass to the bank. There are pilings that come quite a ways out in the water. If you go to that bank and fish south, there are seveal boat docks. After a short distance, the bank turns and heads out in to the lake. It goes out quite a distance to a point. This point is quite wooded. If you continue around the point, you will eventually come back to an area very close to the second open lake. That entire point, fishing the bank line and scattered trees can be good. On around the point, I remember a tree that is the "boot" tree because it has a bunch of boots in it. I have also caught fish in the second open lake, fishing the bank line and boat docks. Now that you are totally confused ???....good luck. ;D
Me and my partner are fishing Media again this year, last year we started on black lake. We got skunked, not a bump one. I believe most of the teams that came out in the money were fishing north of the bridge. We fished the south end last year and we were on some fish the week before the tournament but a cold front had come through and we couldnt find a fish. I have talked to a couple of people fishing media who have gone to Black Lake the past couple weekends and they said the bite has not been good. We will be there this Sunday to do a little prefishing and I will post the results. Good luck to all who will be fishing. :)
Thanks Mike and Mike..Ill be there Sunday, maybe my partner will care to join me this time around...**taps foot**
I came across a decent map of the lake chain, I found some probable spots but i think new water and high pressure hurt the bite last Sun...
Ill post what i find out..and Good luck in Media..maybe we can bring honor to our CLUB ;)
And uh NOble..those directions are better than the ones I have received from some..I honestly got this one:
"go bout 1/2 mile south, you'll see the ole hickory nutt tree on the left..there is a ditch that runs along side the base of bank..you can't miss it...." go figure ???
cade, if you have found a map of black Lake call me I need to get with you and show you something you will need to check out this time of the year
on behalf of Cade and I,I say thanks for the info Mr.Mikemrt. If he does not call you I sure will. You know with the way fish are bitting on Blake Lake a little information will sell fairly well. Sound like a business venture? You give the info on how to find the fish and market it to the highest bidder...... whatcha say ;D
A little bit of "good info" can make the difference between first and lets say.......last. Any takers? ;D
Mike..call ya tommorrow.. ;D
but im Broke :(
Fished Black Lake today, man was it cold. We fished both the north and soth end. We fished from 8:00 am until about 1:00 PM. iT WAS SLOW, we only managed one bite and the fish was somewhere betwemm 4 & 5 lbs. It came on a crank bait of all things. There was tournament goiing on and quite a few boats out. The north end of the lake had real stained water, but once you were in the middle of the lake or on the south end the water was pretty clear, just a little stain. Does anyone know what it took to win the tournament? We are going to the river in the morning if the rain will hold off. :o
heard 2 reports: i think there was 2 tournaments saturday, 22lbs won one and 12lbs won the other..thats the best I could figure...with the info i recieved form multiple anglers..
Geesh , I really needto find the fish :-[
Cade
Can anyone tell me where I can find a good map of Black lake Campti? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Berniep
a good Map... ??? ... NO
a decent map..errm..ill have to get back to ya..my brother has some software with the lake on it shows some good things but not the creek channel .however it does have some useful info..i won't see him till tomm.
dunno if it'll help though..they do have one at the launch
My bass club is thinking about fishing black lake are there any places to stay at close by we are coming from des allemands
There is a place on the lake, just across the bridge, that rents rooms...or at least use to. I can't remember the name. Maybe someone can provide more information.
That's Black Lake Lodge, ain't it??? Not sure but I think so.
Marty
I believe that was the name at one time...it changed hands a few years ago, but I don't know if the guy changed the name.
Here ya go, straight off Yahoo. It's about 6.5 miles from Campti to the lodge/lake. 8)
Marty
Black Lake Lodge

Just a note for the ones who have not fished Black Lake in a while. You are now required to purchase a Recreational Use License for Black-Clear-Prairie Lakes. The cost is $5:00. It can be purchased at the launch at Blake Lake Lodge. It expires June 30th after date of issue. ::)
Black Lake Lodge is the place. The boating permit is so freakin lame it smells...it a little piece of green paper that a area politician came up with so he can pay for his fishing trip on Lake Fork ;D
Maptech is the software i used for the so-so map..i have..if your good at reading maps this is the best i have found so far.
Good Luck fellas, Lord knows i'll need it next weekend :'(
Cade
is there a slot limit on black lake
thanks for the help
no slot

Fishing a tournament on Black Lake next month. Never been on the lake before. Any tips would be much appreciated.
:(Fished Black Lake Wed 6pm-8:30pm. Fish breaking the water all around us, but would not hit anything!! We tried topwater, jigs, hard and soft stick baits, buzz bait, and spinner bait.
Kent
You just weren't holding your mouth right! At least that's what my dad always told me.
Trey 8)
I will have to practice my game face between now and Sat. A.M.
See ya Sat.

Can someone tell me a little about this lake without giving up any honey holes?
What types of structure? Trees? Docks? Is it a big lake?
How easy is it to run the lake? Is it wide open or have marked boat roads?
I am just trying to figure out what to expect before we get there for the tournament. We are gonna try to fish it the 4th of July weekend but don't know for sure.I would rather know just a little about the lake rather than go out there TOTALLY lost.
Cypress trees, cypress trees, cypress trees...some boat docks...more cypress trees, cypress trees, cypress trees.
When you leave the landing, you have to idle out to the boat row...couple hundred yards. Whether you go north or south, you will be in a channel that is lined on both sides with...yep, cypress trees. I haven't spent much time going north, but I can tell you about the south. You follow the boat row, sort of curvy, and it will eventually dump you into a large open area. On the other side of that large area is another boat row that will take you further south....and into another open area. I have had my best luck on cypress trees...and I have caught fish on some of the docks. Top water should work early, spinnerbaits are always good, and plastic on the trees should produce. Don't be afraid to throw a spinnerbait during the day.
I hope this helps...good luck.
my best tip would be that when the tournament director says go......drop your trolling motor and go to fishing the grass with floating soft plastic
Bassadict69,
I fished a tourney there Saturday and had a pretty good time. There is a ton of grass on the lake. We started fishing immediately to the right of the boat ramp. There was plenty of grass, so we fished frogs and popper-style, topwater baits. I tried a black buzzbait, but no takers. We got strikes on frogs and topwater baits, but they didn't take the hook. We tried going way north, too. There is a lot of current up there and the water is real muddy. We didn't get a bite there, so we ran to the South-side of the lake. We saw some schooling fish, but they looked too small. We couldn't get a bite from them, so we started heading north again. We found quite a few fish near some lilly pads around noon. We caught eight, but only four would weigh. Caught one on a jig, and the rest came off a rat-l-trap, pop-r, floating worm, and a few strikes on a frog. We went back to the place we started by the ramp. We had several hits on rouges and other topwater baits all the way up to 2:45. The other teams did well on WHITE buzzbaits and white spinnerbaits. Hope this helps.
Trey 8)
Thanks Trey for the indepth post sure do apreciate that. By the way we held an U.B. tournament there about 2 years ago and one of the teams (Brent and Sam) drew a good starting number. Anyway when we call their number they put the trolling motor down and started fishing and had 3 in the boat before we got to the last boat. Just an idea, I might even try it.
I want to know which "Black Lake" we're talking about here. Benton? Campti? Hosston?
Campti
Bassadict69,
Now that I know where I am..... ::)
I would do like Mike said and start at the boat ramp heading north. Buzzbaits, frogs, sluggos over the thicker grass early and watermelon based soft plastics around the trees. For bigger bites, I'd stay on the channel with soft plastics or jigs. Just have fun with it!
Thanks everyone for the info. Now even if I don't get to go out there before the tourny, I'll at least have some idea where to start.
Agree with the comment re: dropping your trolling motor at the launch ramp. After fishing that, go straight across the channel and northward. White buzz bait worked well for us last weekend. We fished it all day as it was cloudy and overcast. Also, be sure you take trailer hooks for the buzz bait and plastic frogs, as they tend to hit short a lot of the time.
Has anyone staid in the motel rooms they have there lately? Just wondering about cost and conditions of the rooms. I might go down the Saturday before the tourney and do a little prefishing and stay the night.
Fished Black Lake Campti this morning till about 1230. First time I had ever been on the lake to truely fish, so we spent alot of time idleing and looking. Lauire caught the big'un of the day a nice 4 pounder but I almost caught "her" with a buzz bait I think I would have won if her hat didn't prevent the hook from setting :o Had a couple top water bites and a couple came on a spinner bait. My biggest was only about 3 and half. The water is really clear expecially for as much rain as we have had but all the water coming is flowing threw a tremendous amount of vegetation and moss so it filters it real good. All of our fishing was south of the bridge, tried to find my way north but it was to confusing with no markers or at least any I would trust. There is alot of current in the lake right now as to be exspected. We did come across some schoolers but couldn't stay with them, it was a very nice bunch of fish 2-3 pounders busting shad in the current.
Any way should be a good touranament with alot of decent fish brought in, see you there....
Fished out Twin Cities Team Club tourney here in Campti yesterday. HOT is the only way to discribe the temp. Fishing was tough. Nothing like last weekend. 6 pounds won it. There were stories of small school fish in some places. Most fish were caught on soft plastics from 2-6 ft. We had several stikes early on top water but caught the majority of our fish on plastics, short fish shallow and keepers in 5-6 ft. No real pattern just hit as many cypress trees as you can........
I saw on the news today that they have plans on the table for a Black Lake drawdown for sometime later this year. Anyone hearing reports for the lake.
Danny
If we are talking about capmpti it sure could use it, but I haven't heard anything about it.
I saw it on the news this morning. The residents that live on the lake want it drawn down and the black lake commission voted to do it, but now they are thinking that they don't have that power. They are currently waiting on information from the state on drawing it down. They are talking about dropping it about 8 feet.
went to black lake today to help a friend practice for the reeve's tourney on the 19th.
fished from 1pm-5:30pm. water temp was 59 degrees and stained. caught 9 fish with the five biggest weighing around 19 or 20 lbs. all of our fish were caught on a flat in about 4 ft. of water. hope the fish will stay in the area for a while.
Shawn, that was an excellent day on the water. WTG. Thanks for the water temp update. At least those fish are doing what they are supposed to, seems every where esle the are being very finicky.
these fish were the first ones i've caught this year on a traditional spring time pattern. i fished all of the spawning areas where i normally catch fish with no luck. i caught these fish in an area that i have never fished before. we were idling through this area, thought it looked good and dicided to try it since we hadn't had luck anywhere else and bam, one solid fish after another. another thing about this area was that it had minnows everywhere. i don't know if that mattered but that was really the only place on the lake we saw concentrations of bait like that.
I'm sure all the bait fish didn't hurt matters at all. From the sounds of it, this flat may be a staging area. Make sure your buddy thinks about that if he gets there during the tournament and doesn't get bit. Thanks for the report. Let us know how it goes for the tourney ~c~
:help: May go 2 Black Lake this weekend, anybody have any reports? :help:
this time of year i always have real good luck on the south end of the lake pitching a zoom ol' monster worm in red bug color in the 5'-8' depth range. they hold tight to the trees. when you catch one pay attention to what kind of tree it came off of
(was it leaning, was it a split tree, etc.) you can put together a tree pattern pretty easy right now. try the bryant creek area if you are familiar with it. first trees out from the bank. hope this helps out. 8)
Thanks for the help on this one Mr. Black Lake ~c~ 21ftskeeter250 Let us know how it goes down there. I might be headed that way before to long ;)
Thanks for the info. I haven't fished Black Lake in about a year, but I'm heading there Sunday. I'll give you guys an report Sunday night. I'm about to move down to BR, so I'm going to have to learn those areas I guess.
Can anyone tell me if Duck Season opens up this weekend (11/12) on Black Lake Campti or if it opens up on (11/19). The LDWF tells me that it does not open until the 19th but all the locals around the lake are telling me it opens on the 12th. I wouldn't put it past the LDWF people to be wrong...seeing that they had to pass be to 7 different people before I got their answer. Got a tourney coming up there on the 12th and would like to give the hunters their room...as long as it's not too close to my room ;D
I left Cypress lake just before lunch, Met Fogy at the launch and told him that I was going to Black lake. Went home, reloaded and gathered the family and went on to Campti. Got to the lake to find it 4.5 to 5 foot low because its in a draw down right now. Lots-o-boats on the water. Crappie fishermen aren't happy right now. The place under the bridge where they catch crappie is overloaded with bass and the crappie won't stay there, As a matter of fact someone caught one over 8lbs last wednesday right under the bridge. anyhow, I ran down the lake a few miles and stopped, fish for about 30 minutes and then ran around the lake for the rest of the afternoon.
Sorry, I guess this isn't a fishing report, but more of a lake report....Use at your own discretion.........Dave
Going to go fish Black Lake Tuesday or Wednesday to get ready for a tourn. on the lake. any one been there any this year yet? Any info right now is great info.
Dave's last post is the only thing I have heard about fishing Campti lately :-\
Well guys, I am not looking forward to a tournament on this lake. I went yesterday, the lake is still really low, spent some time around the bridge with no luck, the water by the bridge area is very clear. Then i rode down to cloud's crossing and the water there was VERY muddy, outside of the creek channel the water at cloud's, was super shallow.
I flipped a black/blue cyclone jig most of the day, caught one 3 pounder and 2 13-inch fish on it. Tried a rattle trap, senko and a spinner bait with no luck at all. It is not looking very good for my chances on this lake, a whole day wasted and I am still not onto any patterns or even any places that I feel holds fish. :'(
When is your tournament?
Last time I was there when the lake was low, going north of the bridge (off pad of course) revieled the main creek channel in places that had plenty of water and where it did there were pleanty of fish. I don't now if you will get to go again before your tourney but you might check it out if you do
man, it sounds like you are on the right track even though you may not think so. With the rain we have gotten and will get the lake will rebound quick....really QUICK...The lake is going to change alot. I would stick with what you are doing. If the lake comes up, try over by mud slough near the islands. There is a real defined line of trees out in the water and the boat road goes right by the point that the trees make. I personally like the cloud crossing area and bird island area...stick with the jig....and maybe a dirt color brush hawg......Good luck, keep us posted with tournament dates and lake levels if you don't mind........Dave
Team Supreme tourn. yesterday, Took 22 lbs to win. we got 2nd with 18. fishing was excellent most all day !!! Had a limit at 8:00. ya'll should have 'great' spring tournaments ~sun ~sun
CWiley, I have been to Black Lake maybe 6 times in my life. This Lake is VERY tough on me. Not real sure where to go or where to start on this lake covered in cypress trees. I know no one wants to give up there super secret fishing honey holes, but would you have anything else that might would start me on the right track? Any help is GREAT help and it would be way more than I have now. Thank you either way though, and good fishing.
Rangerboats, You should have pretty much all the information you need in this thread. Scroll back through all the pages or simply print them out and highlight the areas that look intresting. Good luck......Dave
I read back through this thread and there's some good info in there.
This is one of those lakes that can be hard to figure out becuase of the sheer volume of cover available to the fish.
I worked in the Natchitoches area for a few years and know my way around this lake a bit. You'll find fish stick to patterns concerning those Cypress trees. Some days they are relating to the outside edge of the grouping of trees and other days they are relating to the shallow edge of the tree grouping.
Look for small groupings that have moss grown up or floating around them with a small opening between teh moss and the tree. Pitch a watermelon/pearl senko into that small opening and let it fall weightless. That's my best advice.
anyone have a map or know wher i can get aerial photos of this lake? i have never fished there and i have a tourny there on saturday...any help is greatly appreciated...Jeremy
There isn't really a good map of Black lake, you might try one of your local print shops to find an arieal photo. I know that Herbies tackle box in Alexandria carries a arieal photo of black lake.
It's in the middle of nowhere, Jeremy. I doubt you're going to find too many resources dealing with this lake. In fact, I'd imagine most fishermen around the Northern half of LA don't even know it exists.
Tournament Clubs tend to open your eyes to some bodies of water that you would normally not even know about. I worked in Natchitoches for almost 4 years before I discovered Saline lake existed over there in Winnfield.
Hey tubeflipper, kinda like MillCreek res. in Saline huh?.......Dave
Hey Dave , what about Saline lake down by you. not too many people know about that one even thought the fishing is pretty good. and the schooling in summer is great.
papa
As of Saturday the lake is back to just about pool and the water is cold, took 13#s to win our club tournament...
I just got through saying that papa. (Saline)

Different lake
papa
Really? Where's the Saline you're talking about?
Small lake just south of Grand Bayou, I think it is a different lake, you said your Saline was close to Winnfield, This lake is close to Coushatta.
papa
The both of you are pretty close. If you look at a map, saline is the sister lake of Black, and you may suspect that you can access either lake from one launch, but you can't. The both however drain into the same drainage. Its a pretty good lake, yet again it did have a grass carp problem as did Caney a few years back......Something to think about if you want to fish a lake that doesn't get a whole lot of pressure.........Dave
Coushatta isn't that terribly far from Winnfield...we could be talking about different ends of the same body of water.
You could be right, I checked with mapquest and it says they are 49 miles apart.
Dave may know if there are 2 Saline lakes or just the one.
papa
Those ARE two different lakes but both are called Saline Lake. Weird, but true
I fished the black Lake Tournament Saturday, I flipped a black/blue cyclone jig with a black/blue lake fork craw trailer in freezing weather with 35-40 MPH winds. I must have flipped 13,247 trees. I caught zero bass :'( Oh well on to the next tournament.
prefished black lake today...not a bad day for the angler side of things weather wise...we fished from around 830 to about 2 or 230...got a few bites but only could manage 2...1 about 12 inches and the other was right at 2 lbs...caught both within 50 yds and 15 mins of each other...when we launched saw 2 fellas come off and start cleaning fish...they had a cooler full of bass and crappie...most bass were less than 10 inches but they had 1 that would have went about 4 lbs or so...stock full of eggs...imagine that...they sd all came off of a crawdad crankbait...bout 10 ft of water...Jeremy
Good luck with your tournament Jeremy.
fished black lake for club tournament today...weather was awesome...lol..cold rain and wind? what more adverse conditions are there lol..as of right now i am leading with 14.63...next is 10.30...big bass is 4.93 as of right now...still a few others to fish tomorrow...Jeremy
WHat you catch your on? also what areas, trees? grass?
I'd go with small sticks of dynamite on that lake at this time of year. ~shhh
lucked up on some that were schooling...you could watch the shad jump out of the water then you could almost guarentee that the bass will be right behind...they were busting the water like crazy...i caught them on a bleeding shad rattle trap 1/2 oz but primarily on Wall Hanger solid white indiana willow combination...and a black/blue lizard...all fish were caught in 4 ft of water...no more no less...the schooling fish were all 3+ lb fish...lost several there...and the ones on the trees were the males i presume...lot smaller and no potbelly like the schoolies...i was very suprised at the quality and quantity of fish i caught...also all of mine had that black spot pattern on them...btw the trees we got them on were just your basic groups of 3-5 trees...and all fish bit about 5 ft from tree...so a bad cast can get ya a fish....anyone know the name or reasoning for the black spots?....Jeremy
BJ I bet the shad were pretty large. I know on Caddo just before spawn I have seen them do what you said they were doing. I woild also be surprised if some deeper water was not real close to where they were chasing shad.
a few years ago I had schooling bass in the 4-5 lb. range chasing shad on a 28 degree morning.
papa
just found out that i took second place...got beat out by a 16 lb bag....big bass went right at 6.50...o well always next month...that was my first limit and my biggest weigh in sack...all in all good for me lol...Jeremy
I heard that when bass have the black spots on them it means there are more around. Dont quote me on this but this is what i heard.
what was the guy who came in first doing. And where was he at ?
it was a buddy of mine who i gave some of spinnerbaits to...he sd he caught most of his on my white wall hanger spinnerbait...off of the trees and then he sd he caught 2 pitching a southpaw jig up to the cypress as well...black and blue 9/16oz...Jeremy
the black spots is a mild fungus growth
what area of black lake were you fishing b1 jermey

I fished with a buddy last month who caught a fish with the black spots on it and he said "watch this im going to catch another one in the same spot that I just caught that one ".I asked him what made him so sure and he replied that when bass have those spots that usually means they are grouped up ,he caught three more back to back (those were the only fish caught that entire day). It happened again since then and three were caught on caddo back to back to back with the same buddy. He said he learned it from a pro on Lake Fork. I know its supposed to be a fungus but Im starting to believe in this group theory. But then again ,I believe everything.
new to lake but from what i gather near the public ramp near mud slough...hope that helps
Its not that fish with black spots group up, it is because the fungus is spread throughout the fish in an area or school. ;D

i think i know that guy.....
Paul, i've been told in the past that black spots were healed wound scars? any truth to that?
Well we know they have plenty of sand.
I did my Basis training at Fort Huachuca (WA- Chook-a) and believe me sand is not hard to come by in Arizona :'( (Huachuca) is an old Indian word that means too much lo freaking Sand ~roflmao ~roflmao ~roflmao
papa
That sounds like my last deployment location lo
I was told by Texas fisheries biologist Mike Ryan that it was a fungus but not harmful to fish or humans. ~gator
You can learn a lot from those Texas Fisheries biologists. I got some good advice from the guys over at the Athens Fishery concerning private pond management.
I knew the black spots were a fungus, but I've never heard the story about them grouping up like that. That's pretty interesting. Next time I catch one with the spots, I'll make it a point to try and pull some more out of the same hole. :-*
I have also come to believe that this fungus is only in shallow water? If you hook in to some deep fish they can be very pale but when your on shallow fish they have a darker deep color like a sun tan with us, stay inside = White guys! Stay on the lake fishing all day and turn into a sun burnt/tan old dude = Papa! ~roflmao
I think with the shallow water fish have a greater chance having the fungus and parasites as well.
Fogy
papa are you a sun burnt/tan old dude ~roflmao ~roflmao
Anyone fishing media this weekend ?
