Dobyns Champion Series XP 736 CB Glass
Gary Dobyns designed the Dobyns Champion Series XP 736 CB Glass rod specifically for vibrating jigs. However, in doing so, he created a multi-use rod perfectly capable of launching large ledge busting spinnerbaits and oversized cover plowing squarebill crankbaits. I owned the first bass I hooked with the Dobyns Champion Series XP 736 CB Glass. A nice three-pound bass inhaled a half ounce chatterbait in three feet of water. From strike to lipping, this bass never had a chance.
Dobyns Champion Series XP 736 CB Glass, the perfect chatterbait rod
The chatterbait, it’s an outstanding bass attracting tool and one of the best search baits I’ve ever used for covering shallow water. However, by nature of design, the chatterbait does not have an excellent record for hook up to land ratio. The blade can jam in a bass’s mouth and prevent hook penetration into the jaw of a bass. Also, all the weight is at the top of the bait giving bass leverage to shake it loose. An effective hook up to land ratio requires a powerful hook set and the ability to prevent a bass from migrating the hook free. These two requirements contradict each other regarding rod power and action.
Achieving a solid hook set we need strong power like a jig rod, but to prevent hook migration we need a lighter action similar to a crankbait rod. Strong power will pull the blade part of the bait through the lips of a bass and the hook into its jaw. Lighter tip actions provide the flex necessary to keep the line taught and prevent slack line during battle. Bass can’t shake the bait free with a taught line.
For the mentioned reasons, a glass rod makes sense. Glass rods have the give and rebound required to keep a hook from moving in a bass’s mouth. However, typically a glass rod does not have the backbone or penetrating force necessary to set the larger single hooks of vibrating swim jigs or chatterbaits. The medium back bone in a glass rod makes it perfect for treble hook baits. The answer is Dobyns fiberglass and graphite composite rods. Gary’s CB (crankbait) series glass rods have filled the niche I was looking for in a chatterbait rod. The graphite bottom half gives me the necessary backbone to drive a single hook through the jaw of a bass, while the glass tip section provides flex and reacts to a bass jumping and shaking its head. The Dobyns Champion Series XP 736 CB Glass provides solid hooksets and prevents bait movement in a hooked bass.
The versatility of the Dobyns Champion Series XP 736 CB Glass
While Gary designed the Dobyns Champion Series XP 736 CB Glass rod specifically for chatterbaits and vibrating jigs; anglers across the country are finding this rod fills a variety of needs. It didn’t take long for anglers to realize the Dobyns Champion Series XP 736 CB Glass casts larger spinnerbaits long distances. Having a glass top section, the rod loads and launches baits. However, the graphite bottom half gives anglers the power needed to drive a large spinnerbait hook into a bass, even on long casts.
Many anglers have also found this rod to be perfect for larger squarebill crankbaits. The Dobyns Champion Series XP 736 CB Glass rod, being a six power, handles these heavy-weight squarebill crankbaits with ease. I can cast them like a rocket over stump filled flats, or pitch them under docks and around brush. Because of the baits large size, the bass crushing them are not small nor timid. Anglers need a rod with the power to pull large bass from thick cover. As I said in the opening, this rod owns bass. When I hook up with a quality bass on a squarebill crankbait, I simply lean into it and let the rod do the work. These critical first few feet determine if the bass will end up in the boat or swim free.
Getting a three pound plus bass away from cover and heading towards the boats is easy with the Dobyns Champion Series XP 736 CB Glass. Just apply constant pressure and let the rod pull the bass out. Once the rod has pulled the bass from the cover, now it can be played to the boat. Should a large bass make a surge, the rod has the give necessary to prevent hooks from tearing free. Keep in mind, these large squarebill crankbaits have oversized hooks, the six power of this rod does a great job of getting these hooks to grab, and the upper glass section keeps these oversized hooks pegged.
Summing up the Dobyns Champion Series XP 736 CB Glass
The Dobyns Champion Series XP 736 CB Glass is a perfect blend of graphite and glass giving anglers multiple technique options in a single rod. In my opinion, every angler needs to feel the magic of the Dobyns Champion Series XP 736 CB Glass. Vibrating jigs, large spinnerbaits, and oversized squarebill crankbaits, the Champion Series XP 736 changes the game to the angler’s favor.
