Lake Palestine Poker Run Benefit MDA

H&W 3rd Annual Poker Run Lake Palestine

For 45 years now, Jerry Lewis’ Kids have become synonymous with Labor Day Weekend. This year you can enjoy a great day of fun and support the incredible work they do at the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Several years back, the folks at H&W Marine came up with a really fun boating event to help raise money for Jerry’s Kids. This year, the 3rd annual Lake Palestine Poker Run to benefit MDA will be on Saturday, September 4, 2009, Labor Day Weekend. Boaters from all of East Texas are invited to participate in what’s bound to be a great day of fun for the entire family.

To participate, come out in your boat to the Villages Marina on Lake Palestine Saturday, September 4th and register between 12:00 noon and 2:00 p.m. The entry fee is $25.00 per hand and you will receive a map of Lake Palestine with 5 designated points on the lake marked.

The Game will begin that day at 1:00 p.m. Take your family and friends out boating and locate each of the 5 designated pick-up points marked on the map. At each of the designated points, you will pick up one sealed Poker Card for each hand purchased. Each boat has until 5:00 p.m. to be back to The Villages Marina with all of their Poker Cards.

Starting at 5:00 everyone’s cards will be revealed. Those with the best hands will win cash and great prizes. H&W Marine is also offering a bonus of $250.00 to the Winner if the boat that they are participating in was purchased from H&W Marine in the last 2 years. In case of a tie, the Winner will be decided by drawing cards – highest card wins. There will also be an array of sponsor-donated prizes given out.

The check for funds raised at the Poker Run will be presented to MDA Live during the Telethon on Monday, September 6th. The 2010 Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon is the 45th annual Labor Day show. It will be broadcast on 190 “Love Network” stations across the country and can be seen on the Internet via streaming video at www.mda.com. Locally, it will broadcast live on KETK/NBC Labor Day starting at 7:40AM Monday, September 6th. Some 40 million viewers in North America watch the MDA Telethon each year. At least 250,000 volunteers across the country will be involved in the Telethon over this Labor Day weekend.

The Telethon is the single most important fundraising event of the year for MDA. Funds raised help the Association carry on its fight against more than 40 neuromuscular diseases, including a worldwide program of basic and applied research, a nationwide network of comprehensive medical and support services, and extensive professional and public education.

The first Telethon was held in June 1955 at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The 16 1/2-hour show raised $600,000 for MDA and was broadcast on DuMont station WABD. The first MDA Labor Day Telethon was broadcast in 1966 by just one station in New York City. It was the first televised fund-raising event of its kind to raise more than $1 million. Jerry’s goal of raising “one dollar more” than the previous year’s amount has been more than met almost every year, thanks to the generosity and compassion of the American public.

East Texas Boaters can all have a great time with friends and family on the water at the Lake Palestine Poker Run while contributing to what will hopefully be the best year ever for MDA’s fund raising efforts.

This year’s event is made possible by the generosity of H&W Marine, Gander Mtn., The Villages Marina, Grainger, David Archer and many other area businesses and volunteers.
