In the last segment I spoke of how I got hooked, today I’m going to explain why I’ve turned into an addict. How do you know you’re a junkie? Here are some signs to watch for: When you understand a sentence like “Crank from 2′ to 10′ ” or you use the words “dink”, “hawg”, “bait monkey”, “stickups” and “lunker” in your every day vocabulary. And the last sign is when you drive by a body of water and don’t see the beauty of it, instead you see a bass swimming in the water.
There are many ways to curve your addiction. The main one of course is to get out and fish. This will keep the DT’s away for several days. For when you can’t get outside, go on line to UB, this will help with the cravings.
Believe it or not, Knowledge will increase your addition. After our Rally on Lake Fork, my husband started to teach me why we fish at certain areas. This is where he explains why we pass several coves before settling on another. Here are some points he had me asking myself:
1) Weather conditions
a) Is there a cold front on the way?
b) Did it rain? and if yes, how much?
c) Which way the wind it blowing? and How strong?
2) Was there a full moon?
3) What is the water and air temps? (day & night)
I know this doesn’t seem like a lot but for a rookie who just learned that bass fishing is not all about just throwing a bait out in the water and wait for a bite. The reason to keep all this in mind is for the answer: What, How, and Where the bass will be feeding. Let’s say the night before your fishing trip there was a full moon. Well, there is a good possibility the shad was very active during the night and the bass could of been in a feeding frenzy. In which this could make it harder to get the bass to bite because they are full. The more the knowledge you ingest, the more you feed your addiction. The only thing that will help with this is to put it all together and go fish. Then to see if calculations helped you catch that hawg.
Looking back in my memory at when I started to do these calculations was March ’08 at Toledo Bend. This was a lake I’ve never fished. My husband and I looked over the maps and read fishing reports on Ultimate Bass the night before. We also checked the weather when we checked in at the Park entrance. There I am, walking down the ramp and Shawn is getting all the rods out of the boat locker. As I look out over the water and the mist is rising off the water; I see a point on the right side of the cove. My right hand has now begun to twitch and itch. I take a deep calming breath and tell my addiction, “soon”. I get on board and we head north to Negreet, this is where we discussed the night before where we would try first. The reason for this choice is because it had all the things we were looking for: a channel running through it, points, docks, and stickups. As we pulled into this cove I’m starting to feel the gut wrenching need to fish. We started on one shore line, as we worked our way to the point we were really interested in, all our adding came up a plus. This point had a drop off and a dock on one side. We received several big bites and chewed up baits. We just didn’t calculate the bass short biting. So, now we idled around this cove to “look around”. We found several large fish stacked on a hump next to the channel. We now head back in to give our report to the other team members so everyone can cuss and discuss what to do next.
So, to all you rookies out there; there is more to fishing then lines, rods, and reels. If you want to feel the true addiction, get the facts of where you are going to be fishing. Put what you have learned together. The feel of catching that hawg at the spot you chose due to your research efforts is the major FIX. As for me, the addiction is still coursing through my veins and I’m waiting on my next hit on the lake. Till next time, be safe and tight lines.
