Greetings, My name is Donald Garner and I’ve been an Ultimate Bass Member since Aug 2009. My wife Gail and I live in Belton, Texas, located 40 miles South of Waco and 60 miles North of Austin. We have two grown children. Our daughter, Pam, lives in Seattle, Washington. Dwayne, our son, and his wife Amy live in Anchorage, Alaska with our grandchildren.
I was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri and graduated from Berkeley High School in 1974. In May of 1975, I joined the Army and for the next 30 years served in a matrix of positions and duty locations. I retired in May 2005 after serving as the Operations Sergeant Major of 2/5 Cav, 1st Cav Div. Ft. Hood, Texas.
Jul 2005 – Dec 2011 I worked as a Senior Logistics Coordinator for Kellogg Brown and Root in Iraq. After coming home, I spent the next couple years getting to re-know my wife and family. I presently work as the Lead Maintenance Supervisor for the South Belton Middle School.
My love for the sport of bass fishing began in 1973. After getting my first boat, I spent every moment I could fishing the Oxbows off the Mississippi River north of St. Louis. I practiced everything I watched Bill Dance, Jimmy Houston, and Virgil Ward do on their TV shows. During my military career, I’ve had the opportunity to fish some of the finest waters in Arizona, Kentucky, Louisiana, Alaska, Missouri, Texas, Georgia, and Alabama. During my time at Fort Polk, Louisiana I had the opportunity to spend a lot of time on Toledo Bend and Sam Rayburn.
My tournament fishing is limited to ‘Fishing for Freedom’ events here on Belton Lake in Central Texas. It’s an event where boaters are paired with active and retired military members. There are also members of the ‘Wounded Warrior Program’ taking part. I also fish the Brigadier General Charles B. Allen event on Stillhouse Lake in Belton. Here again, boaters are paired with active duty military members from Fort Hood. Once in a while I’ll travel back to Louisiana and fish the annual UBCS events sponsored by ‘Lock Jaw’ and TCTC fishing clubs.
