Hot Forecast for JASPER Pro Jimmy Ward
Jimmy Ward Angling Report from Bassmaster Series Northern Tour
Plattsburgh, NY: Jasper Engines & Transmissions Pro Jimmy Ward returns to his favorite waters of Lake Champlain for round two of the ESPN Outdoors
Bassmaster Series Adirondack Division tournament event on August 6th. Ward
has fished the lake many times and knows that the weather is sure to be a major factor in the tournament outcome this weekend. The east coast as well as much of the country is in the midst of a heat wave and the effects it has on the fish will dictate the results. Temperatures soared to highs of 96 degrees with heat index well over 100 degrees leading up to tournament time. The U.S. Weather Service had heat advisories issued for Plattsburg on Tuesday but calling for slightly cooler weather on Sunday with highs reaching “only” 84 degrees.
“I’ve been watching the weather all week long,” said Ward. “I’m going to be fishing for large mouth bass and looking for them in the weeds and mats.
During weather like this, the fish will likely be in the weeds to keep as cool as possible.”
With this kind of hot humid temperatures, Ward expects that the early morning hours will be the best fishing time and get harder to catch fish as the day gets hotter. “If it stays cooler, it should be a good steady bite, but with hot weather I’ll be flipping for largemouth. Lake Champlain is simply a fish factory, but with hotter temperatures, it will be more difficult to know where they are and try to get them active enough to bite.”
Ward is no stranger to Lake Champlain and has had strong results here including an 8th place finish at a BFL tournament event in 2004. “Weather is always a key element at Lake Champlain. Often the weather is rainy and windy, but that is not the case this year,” added Ward. “It’s going to be a very hot sun beating down on the water. No matter how you look at it, it’s going to be tough conditions for both the fish and the anglers on Sunday!”
