Well, the tournament didn't go as well as I had planned but here is the run down.
Had motor trouble the first day of practice, which if you are going to have trouble, I sure want it during practice.
Second day of practice I ran up the Pearl River as far as I could and found my spots were flooded, cold and muddy. I dedicated the day to the river with no luck finding fish.
The third day of practice I ran down to the opposite end of the lake, hoping the muddy flooded conditions had not affected the lower end of Ross Barnett. The water was OK, I just could never get on a bite to make me want to stay or run to that end during the tournament.
Tournament day I fished the mouth of the main lake where the Pearl River enters into the lake. The water was rising slower there than in the river and I found warmer water there (46-49 degrees) also.
I put a Strike King Pro Model Jig (Blk/Blu) in my hand and went at it all day. I also told my partner thats what I planned to do and he did the same and went with a Jig.
I had two bites all day and caught one keeper (2.11 lbs.) and my partner had three bites and caught two keepers.
I was feeling pretty bad about the day until weigh-in and ended up in 32nd place and my non-boater partner got a good check for his efforts.
Not a great start, but I'll take it going to my home lake (Pickwick) for the next tournament. Hopefully I will be able to move up in the standings, the top 30 is what everyone is shooting for.
Good Luck this Year to All,
Steve Barnett
