Be Gone, You. The Dreaded Backlash!

Okay, Maybe we won't be able to send the dreaded backlash to the far recesses of our minds, like a distant memory, but I do have a tip that will astound, amaze and stupefy you. (notice all the big words, this must be good)      

How many times are you setting up a rod with different lure, casting into the wind or bumping the trolling motor while pitching and end up with a backlash, ratsnest, birdsnest etc.  I know I have plenty of times.  Then the wasted time, trying to pick the blamed thing out...the aggravation...Heck with it,  just throw the rod down and get another until you have time to cut it out...right...  N O   M O R E!!!!!

I was fishing on Toledo Bend yesterday and was shown the coolest trick for removing a black lash, quickly and efficiently with little time wasted and almost ZERO stress.   I was setting up a new rod/reel with a jig and backlashed...I did some fussing and picked it out.  I backlashed again on the next cast (yeah I know) and was given this tip.... (I love this!)

When the reel is backlashed, pull out your line as you normally would until your line stops. (is tangled and wont come free) put your thumb on the spool, press down hard and reel in two revolutions of the handle.  Press the spool release button (the one you use to cast with) and resume pulling out your back lash, it is amazing how well this actually works. 

I (believe it or not) was almost hoping to backlash another time so I could try it again and verify the effectiveness of this tip.  Maybe this is something everyone else already knows but man, it saves a lot of time on the water and a lot of stress.  Will actually put more fish in the livewell because the bait will be in the water more...

BTW, I was so excited about this tip that I missed a fish picking up my lure, set the hook and found wood...Not to worry though, two casts later hooked up and swung him in.

Oh Yeah, forgot to add that each time your line stops pulling free from the spool due to a tangle, just repeat pressing down on the spool and reeling in two revolutions...

I was told this won't work every single time but so far it has worked over ten times in a row for me...

Hey Iclass, were you using mono or braid when you got this trick to work?

I can vouch as to the effectiveness of this tip! It actually works. You may have to do it quite a few times if the backlash is real bad, but it is still quicker & easier than picking at it or cutting it out & restringing!

I was using 20lb Fluorocarbon, am sure it would work on Mono.  Braid may be an entirely different story...I don't have any braid strung right now...Don't really use it in the winter.  Will have to give it a try and update this post.

Good tip! I get my share of backlashes and have spent a lot of time trying to get them out. Anything that gets the bait back in the water a little faster will certainly help.

Yep, Its fine with braid too. This year was my first time with a bait caster and I must confess that I had to use this trick a time or two
i tried picking it out a few times before I learned this trick on UB and I gotta say I don't know if I would have spent as much time using my new bait caster if I was picin them out all the time.

It's official...I have tried this on Mono, Flouro, and Braid.  Works on all three.

Yep someone posted this a long time ago and it works on all lines.  IMO braid is the hardest but it still works as long as you follow the guidance iclass posted.

Ya its a good tip but i can't get to work for braid but oh well

With braid I've found that 1. do not pull hard 2. use your finger nail rather than just the pad of your thumb. 3 do not pull hard 4. do this over and over until it comes out.
