I was making, organizing, and trimming up some jigs the other night, and I always hated trimming the fiber weed guards. I have a set of very sharp scissors that cut well, but the cut was always messy and some what uneven. When I was walking down a isle at wal-mart today, I saw the go to item to fix this.  A pair of dog toe nail trimmers. They have a hole in the center that you can insert the guard in to, and after a quick squeeze of the handle, you have a perfect smooth cut. Best of all, doing this over a trash can leaves no mess! :)

Beast any photos on how you trim up your jigs?  Like a before and after?  I have been meaning to start a thread about that latley with winter around the corner.

Thanks for the props guys. I've been meaning to try it for a while, and I almost forgot till I walked right past them in the store. It really worked much better than I thought and they are easily stored in the boat.

Blake, fiber guards vary per brand, but I like to trim mine down just a touch longer than the hook point. Some I don't mess with, others like the one pictured below come very long. Pics are of a black neon I made up/cut last night, a untouched head, and the trimmers: Sorry about the crappy pics. ???

After you trim them do you spread them out like a fan or cut down the number of total fibers next to the head?

beast96z

No, I really don't like it when they spread out, but they will do it on their own, by nature, after a while. I haven't found a need to "thin out" the guards yet. I mostly use KaRu jigs, and the guards aren't to thick. However, these jig heads I bought had extremely long guards.
